Ian Wright blasts Tottenham Hotspur for their tactics after a tepid defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion

Speaking on the Premier League post-match production show as quoted by Metro, Ian Wright gave a scathing verdict of Tottenham Hotspur after they suffered a limp defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.

The North Londoners who came into the match with a stellar track record were only a shadow of themselves against the Seagulls. The Lilwyhites failed to manage a single shot on target as Graham Potter’s men were set up in an excellent manner.

Brighton not only enjoyed more possession but also had more shots on target and looked more threatening on the attack. Their industry was finally rewarded as Leandro Trossard put the ball past Hugo Lloris in the 90th minute with an exquisite outside foot finish.

It would be fair to say that the visitors deserved the three points on the day and the only positive may be that Arsenal also dropped points against Southampton. This leaves the race for the fourth spot in the PL wide open.

Speaking on premier league post-production as quoted by Metro, Wright tore into Antonio Conte and his men. He highlighted a lack of effort and coordination against the Seagulls.

‘I can’t understand the tactics today, they played like an away side. They weren’t passing through the lines, Harry Kane wasn’t coming short, they weren’t pressing Brighton high to win the ball in the last third, to win the ball in those high areas to then attack them and it was very confusing when you consider what they’ve done leading into this game. But Brighton showed that little bit of class in the end and they won the game.’

No Conte magic today

We have now become accustomed to watching our team pile the pressure on opposing defences with Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min running riot. Dejan Kulusevski has also been an ecstatic presence since making the switch to Hotspur Way.

That being said, none of them had a great impact on the team today. This was one of our poorer performances in a long time under Antonio Conte which would have left the supporters bewildered, to say the least.

It would be fair to say that Spurs would have to put up better performances should they dream of UEFA Champions League qualification next season. We take on Brentford coming Saturday and the Italian manager would want his men to get back to winning ways.

Every match henceforth should be played like a cup final and the Italian manager has made this point very clear in the past. With six matches remaining in the Premier League season, Manchester United and Arsenal are too close for comfort.

Putting some distance between us and them should be the first priority. Many of our fans would be echoing the same concerns as the former Arsenal icon after today’s display. That being said, only time can tell whether we can put this behind us with Champions League football within touching distance.
