Arsenal set to contact Bologna for Aaron Hickey, admired by Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte

According to the Italian news outlet Corriere de Bologna (h/t Daily Mail Online), Arsenal are set to contact Bologna to sign Aaron Hickey, who is admired by Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte. He is one of the rising prospects in Serie A, which has made him one of the hottest talents at this moment.

The Gunners are looking in the market for a new left-back to replace Nuno Tavares in the summer transfer window. They have identified Hickey as a suitable target and are lining up a potential move for him after this season. It is claimed that they are set to make “imminent” contact with the Serie A club to meet their needs.

Conte is a fan of the Scottish international’s talents, although it is unknown whether he has asked Tottenham to target the youngster at this stage. That being said, Brentford, Newcastle United and AC Milan have expressed an interest in securing Hickey’s signature ahead of the next term.

Should Spurs target Hickey?

Spurs have two solid options in Ryan Sessegnon and Sergio Reguilon in their squad right now, although questions can be raised against their long-term prospects. Both of them could use some improvements in their game if they hope to become regular starters moving forward.

However, there are other potential issues as well, such as the recurring hamstring injuries in Sessegnon’s case. We would hope that he can overcome these struggles, but that is not certain for now. Meanwhile, Reguilon’s future at N-17 is in doubt, considering how he is playing second fiddle right now.

Reguilon has often shown a great deal of promise, but he has failed when it comes to making the final touches in his game. That has played a part in him losing the starting spot to Sessegnon, which does raise questions over his long-term future. Not to mention, Real Madrid also have a £43million buy-back option for him this summer, so it remains to be seen how that situation develops in the coming months.

It would be wise on our part to look at potential targets for the left wing-back position amidst these uncertainties. Perhaps, Hickey can be one of those options, especially when Conte admires his qualities anyway. Moreover, the defender’s £17million valuation is not too expensive either, making him an attractive prospect.

That being said, with Mikel Arteta’s side setting things up for a potential move, we must make a quick decision not to lose out on a future superstar in the making. The 19-year-old has already suggested that he is interested in moving to the Premier League, which should worry us with our bitter rivals looking to win this transfer race.

Let’s hope that Fabio Paratici will assess this matter at the earliest to see whether Hickey should be targeted or not this summer. That would probably depend upon other options in the squad so let’s keep close tabs on their situation as well.
