Rio Ferdinand: Tottenham Hotspur must back Antonio Conte in the summer transfer window
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has advised Tottenham Hotspur that they must back Antonio Conte by making signings in the summer transfer window. There is an expectation within the fanbase that Daniel Levy would do his best to make use of the world-class coach in their ranks.
Conte came in at a precarious situation as Tottenham were ninth in the Premier League table, and they had been rapidly dropping their level under Nuno Espirito Santo. That has changed a lot since then, as they are in contention to make it into the next season’s Champions League right now.
Speaking on BT Sport (h/t The Mirror), Ferdinand believes the Italian manager has done more than enough to be backed this summer. He pointed out how Spurs are third in points and the goals scored behind Liverpool and Manchester City since Conte has taken over the managerial job to support his statement.
“He’s done enough to deserve that [backing]. Since he’s been here he’s third in points gained and goals scored, only behind the top two [Liverpool and City] who are running at the different level in the Premier League. He’s brought this club to where they were at, confidence-wise. We watched them at Anfield and they put a performance there and you think, mentally, they’re at it.”
Levy has an obvious choice
The former Man United defender continued by mentioning how the 52-year-old boss has brought in success at his previous clubs indicating the world-class quality he possesses. Ferdinand tells Levy that the chief has one reasonable choice to make in this situation which is to support the man in charge through signings this summer.
“He needs the reinforcement from the board, that commitment from the board financially. You have to bet on him. What he did with Chelsea coming here winning the league, Serie A, he’s won the league there. I don’t think you can question this guy in terms of what he can bring. He can win things. This guy’s a top-level manager.”
Let’s be honest, the expectations when Conte initially moved to N17 were to uplift the squad and improve them as much as possible. But he has far surpassed those objectives and even made Tottenham top four contenders in a short period, which shows the opportunity Levy has at his hands.
What’s more, even the winter reinforcements like Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur came in with low expectations due to their disappointing spell at Juventus. Conte has reinvigorated them and has made them top-quality additions, which further highlights his quality.
Even if Conte misses out on CL football for the next term, he has warranted more than enough to deserve support from the management. We finally have an opportunity to end our title drought once and for all under a top-notch coach like the former Inter Milan man.

We already have a solid base for the project to be built under Conte, but what we need is to address the lack of quality in depth when looking at Man City or the Reds’ squad. Once that is taken care of, Spurs could have a genuine chance to challenge the heavyweights and pip them to win silverware.
Let’s hope that Levy would pay heed to Ferdinand’s words and make the most obvious decision he can at this point. Only time will tell whether the chief would back Conte in the transfer market or not this summer.
