Transfer News: AS Monaco express interest in Tottenham Hotspur star Davinson Sanchez
According to Alasdair Gold, the club’s correspondent for Football.London, AS Monaco have expressed their interest in securing the services of Tottenham Hotspur star Davinson Sanchez on a potential transfer move. He was largely sidelined in the second half of the last season after Cristian Romero returned from his long-term injury.
Sanchez’s future at N17 has been clouded by uncertainty towards the tail end of the previous campaign, although a spell of impressive performances at the end following Romero’s injury helped in changing his fate. Despite that, it was claimed last week that Tottenham are open to accepting offers for Sanchez.
Now, Monaco have entered the mix, having registered an interest in Sanchez ahead of the next season. Perhaps, he could be seeing the end of the road for his time at Spurs if both clubs can reach an agreement over the transfer fee involved in a potential move.
Should Spurs sell Sanchez?
The Colombian international’s game in the early stages of Antonio Conte’s tenure was filled with mistakes. However, the 26-year-old seems to have ironed them out as his impressive form at the end of the last campaign played a major role in helping us achieve qualification to the Champions League.
There is no doubt that Romero would be a regular starter moving forward, but Sanchez could be an ideal backup for us. We are not blessed with many options at this moment in the centre-back positions, with Joe Rodon also wanting to leave this summer in search of regular game time.
That leaves us with just Japhet Tanganga, who is not the most reliable of options to be depended upon regularly. We also saw Cameron Carter-Vickers join Celtic permanently this summer, further indicating the need to maintain a good depth, especially with the use of the three at the back system.
Then again, Gold has also suggested that perhaps the North London club could indulge in talks with the French side on a potential swap deal with Benoit Badiashile. We are searching the market for a left-sided centre-back, considering how Ben Davies, who is a natural full-back, deputised in that role for Conte in the last campaign.

If that is the case, then we should only entertain proposals for Sanchez if we can address our more immediate need in the left centre-half position. Then again, we have other options for that role on our shortlist, who are more established than Badiashile at this moment.
Hence, it will be interesting to see how this situation pans out in the coming weeks. If we can bring in a left-central defender other than Badiashile, then perhaps Sanchez should be kept in the squad to maintain our depth ahead of a long season that lies ahead.
