Tottenham Hotspur dealt blow as Villarreal chief reveals complications in Giovani Lo Celso transfer
Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a blow after Villarreal chief Roig Negueroles revealed that there are complications in facilitating a transfer move for Giovani Lo Celso. The midfielder has been linked with a return to Estadio de la Ceramica following his splendid loan with them last season.
Lo Celso was allowed to go out on loan back in January after failing to impress Antonio Conte. He teamed up with Unai Emery on a short-term loan spell and excelled with flying colours. After all, the midfielder was integral to the Spanish club’s impressive run in the Champions League.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Vila-real, as relayed by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Negueroles has admitted that they would like to sign Lo Celso this summer. However, the club CEO confirmed that they have not been in discussions with Tottenham and that a transfer is “very complicated” right now.
“Lo Celso is a player who has been happy here and has made us happy, so we would like to continue together. He’s a Tottenham player and it is a very complicated operation as of now – we’re not even in talks.”
Concerning update?
It is quite unfortunate how things did not pan out at Spurs for Lo Celso, as his quality cannot ever be questioned. However, injuries at inopportune moments prevented him from making a case with Conte, which did play a part in his temporary exit in the winter transfer window.
Lo Celso’s impressive displays for Argentina and the Yellow Submarines in the Champions League have caused some fans to believe that he deserves a final chance at N17. However, such an outcome is not on the cards as the midfielder is free to leave once again ahead of the next season.
More importantly, we can warrant earning a solid sum from the 26-year-old’s sale, considering his recent run of form. However, it is concerning to see that no progress has been made regarding his move at this point with Emery’s team.
We also have an interest in Pau Torres to improve our options in the backline, so perhaps that could play a part in helping to finalise a transfer for Lo Celso. It remains to be seen if both clubs can reach an agreement in a potential exchange deal to overcome the complications in a move.

We incurred £27.2million in expenses while signing Lo Celso permanently from Real Betis back in 2020. There were concerns about recouping that amount in the past, but perhaps his recent performances could lend us a hand in recovering a large part of that sum this summer.
Let’s hope to see that happen, as it would greatly help raise some much-needed funds to build a strong project, which Conte can use to strive for success in North London.
