Transfer News: Ajax give Tottenham Davin Sanchez waiver as part of Steven Bergwijn deal

Tottenham Hotspur have revealed their asking price for Steven Bergwijn.

Ajax waive some of the fee owed by Tottenham Hotspur for Davinson Sanchez in Steven Bergwijn deal

Steven Bergwijn is set to join Ajax from Tottenham Hotspur in a £28million deal that also included a waiver on some of the fees Spurs owe the Dutch side for Davinson Sanchez, according to the Daily Mail.

The Colombian defender was bought by the North London club in 2017 for £42million from the Eredivisie champions. Tottenham still owe Ajax a part of the sum for the centre-back and the Godenzonen have forgone some of that money as part of the deal that will see Bergwijn join the Dutch side.

The 24-year-old joined Spurs back in the winter window of 2020 from Ajax’s rivals PSV Eindhoven. In his time with the North London side, the winger has had a couple of iconic performances but largely failed to succeed as a regular under either Jose Mourinho or Antonio Conte.

In the 2020/21 campaign, Bergwijn started 13 games in the Premier League for Spurs. The Dutchman played a total of 35 games that season, scoring one and assisting seven goals. Under Jose Mourinho and then Ryan Mason for a while, the 24-year-old was getting some sort of opportunity.

But in the 2021/22 season, things have turned sour for Bergwijn in terms of game time. The attacker started just four times for Tottenham; three of those starts came in the campaign’s first three games under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Now, the Dutch national looks set to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and ply his trade back in the Netherlands, where the 24-year-old first thrived and made a name for himself. The World Cup in Qatar is also weighing on the minds of players.

Sanchez hasn’t lived up to the price tag

Sanchez was brought from Ajax for a lot of money at the time. The centre-back has been a good servant for Spurs since then and has been a regular part of the first XI for most of his years in North London.

Under Mourinho, the Colombian found it hard to get regular starts and while it was expected that Sanchez would become a pinned starter in our backline, that is yet to happen. Injuries have also not helped the defender’s cause.

Sanchez has made 180 appearances for Tottenham in his five years at the club. The 26-year-old is now one of the most experienced centre-backs we’ve got in the side, alongside Eric Dier. While fans will feel the Colombian hasn’t lived up to his price tag, there’s still a long way to go for the defender in his career.

Having a coach like Conte, who is known for setting up teams with strong defences, would also be of assistance to Sanchez in order for him to achieve his full potential. Next season could be a big one for the South American star.
