Transfer News: Matt Doherty has been told he can leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Matt Doherty has been told that he can leave the club this summer, according to TalkSport (h/t Football. London).

Doherty joined Spurs in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers but has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Emerson Royal. The 30-year-old struggled for game time last season as he failed to play in the first half of the season.

The Irish international could only manage to make 14 league appearances as he struggled with injury and form. And now after just two years at N17, it seems his time at the club is coming to an end.

Good riddance?

Brought in as a first-team player, Doherty really struggled last season. He did manage to find some form in the latter half of last season, but injury saw him miss the last month. Royal stepped up and delivered in his place, as Spurs managed to clinch a fourth-place finish on the last day of the season.

Now, it seems he is not a part of Antonio Conte’s squad for next season as the Italian revamps the squad in hopes to win some silverware with the Lilywhites. He has already signed the likes of Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet, as he adds depth and quality to his squad to mount a title challenge next season.

Also, his departure could free up space for the potential arrival of Djed Spence. Spurs have been linked with the Middlesbrough right-back for quite some time now and with Doherty’s departure, Tottenham could make a move for the 21-year-old.

It remains to be seen what happens with Doherty. A certain section of the fans will be disappointed to see the player go. If he should depart, who Spurs replace him with could outline their intentions for the next season and maybe also the future.
