Chris Wilder comments on future of Spurs target Djed Spence
Speaking in an interview as quoted by TeesideLive (h/t Football. London), Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder comments on the future of Spurs target Djed Spence after he was left out of Boro’s first pre-season match.
A product of the Fulham youth setup, Spence has impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest last season before returning to his parent club, Middlesbrough. Spurs are said to be keen on signing the talented wing-back.
The 21-year-old English defender was one of the best players in the Championship last season. His performances for Forest have attracted clubs in the top flight of English football and Spurs are no exception.
In 50 games for Forest last season across all competitions, Spence scored three goals and set up five for his teammates. These numbers are very impressive, especially considering that Spence is only 21.
Extremely attacking in nature, Spence is a right-back who can also play further forward and will be perfect for Antonio Conte in the wing-back role. Whilst he may have to sharpen the defensive side of his game, he still is very promising.
Speaking about his future after being left out of the match squad, Wilder conceded that he had no control over what was happening
“I’ve got to say, I’ve taken myself away from it. It’s not my job now, it’s gone beyond me and it’s not up to me to do the negotiating and agree a deal. That’s with the club and the owner and the chief executive”
However, Wilder did concede that if a move did not go through, he will very much count on Djed Spence in the squad
“We all understand the position and as I’ve said before, if it doesn’t go through, then he’s still under contract and he’s our player.”
Tottenham are already making some very shrewd signings in the transfer market ahead of next season and Spence is no different. Playing under Antonio Conte will probably take his game to the next level.
