Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero and midfielder Oliver Skipp to wear new numbers next season
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed today that both defender Cristian Romero and midfielder Oliver Skipp will wear new shirt numbers next season. This news comes ahead of the team’s departure to South Korea for the pre-season.
Romero, who is on loan till next year, wore the number 4 jersey last year. It had been vacant due to Toby Alderweireld’s move to Qatar. However, the Argentine will wear the number 17 for the new campaign. He has chemistry with that number having worn it during his time for Club Atletico Belgrano, Genoa and Atalanta.
Skipp, who currently wears the number 29, has put dibs on his team-mates number and will be the new number 4 for Tottenham during the 2022/23 season. This is his second number switch, having previously worn the number 52.
For the new signings Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Fraser Forster, Clement Lenglet and Richarlison; only Richarlison’s new jersey number has been confirmed. The Brazilian will wear the number 9 during his time at Tottenham Hotspur.
The remaining player’s jersey numbers could be confirmed during the two pre-season-friendly games in South Korea. Squad numbers most of the time tell about the role of the player in the team. A number 10 and 8 is usually the creator or attacking midfielder, while 4, 5 and 6 are defenders.
Usually the lower the number, the higher the chance that the player starts the game for the club. Although that is just an assumption, it varies from team to team and player to player.
Some players wear a number that they consider lucky or have some chemistry with it, while some are allotted by the team to their most marquee players that have been worn by legends through the years.
