Transfer News: Everton expected to step up their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks
According to the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur have told midfielder Harry Winks that he can leave the club this summer. Everton are expected to now step up their pursuit of the defensive midfielder, who has been their target for some time now.
A Spurs academy product, Winks was promoted to the senior team in 2016. Since then he has had a mixed time at the club. A preferred choice by Mauricio Pochettino, he has struggled to get game time since his departure. That seems to have continued even under Antonio Conte.
But now it seems the club is willing to let him go. The defensive midfielder has been a long-time target for those at Goodison Park and now they have the perfect chance to get their man. Winks is expected to cost around £15million.
Long time coming
Winks struggled to get playing time last season as he could only manage 19 league appearances, mostly coming off the bench. It’s been a frustrating few years for the Englishman, with him failing to get game time under any coach. But now that could come to an end.
Conte has signed Yves Bissouma in the midfield this season. He already had the services of Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg available to him. Even Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele have returned from their respective loans.
With such a crowded midfield and a talented one, Winks would likely have less playing time this season than he did in the last. It would be wise for him to move on and provide his services to another club that is willing to give him the playing time he needs.

It would be a win-win situation for both the player and club. The club can reduce their wage bill, while the player can get his desired playing time at another club. Tottenham fans will be happy to see their boy shine elsewhere, having failed to do so at Tottenham.
