Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur could pursue Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni again next season
Tottenham Hotspur could continue their pursuit of Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni next season. This is according to Evening Standard, who say that Spurs could return for the 23-year-old Italian.
Spurs just completed the signing of Clement Lenglet from Barcelona. They have signed the French centre-back on a season-long loan, with no option to buy. The club not opting for this option has raised the speculation that Spurs have not given up hope in their pursuit of Bastoni.
Bastoni joined the Nerazzurri in 2017 from Atalanta but spent the next two seasons on loan at Atalanta and Parma. Since 2019, he has been a pivotal player in the Inter squad, having won the Scudetto in the 2020/21 season under then Inter Milan coach Antonio Conte.
Conte wanted to reunite with his centre-back, but striking a deal proved complicated. Inter were reluctant to sell the player, while the defender was happy to stay at San Siro.
A reunion next season?
Spurs have been rebuilding their squad this summer. Having signed five players already, Tottenham has sent their intent clearly out to their rivals that they mean business next season. Conte will take charge of his first full season at Tottenham next season and he will hope to finish it with silverware.
The Italian tactician wanted to add to the depth in the centre-back area and increase the competition among the existing ones. Bastoni had been identified as one, but after pursuing the man for quite some time, it came to no fruition.
Lenglet emerged as the perfect alternative for the Italian and Spurs were able to secure a loan deal for him. It could be a good deal for both parties. Lenglet gets to potentially increase his playing time, while Spurs can assess Bastoni for one more season and then pursue him again.
It will be interesting to see what happens between Spurs and Bastoni. Currently, Conte will be focused on getting the best out of his players during the pre-season and Spurs fans will be pretty excited for next season, hoping the club ends their trophy drought.
