Conte blocked Tottenham Hotspur starlet Pape Matar Sarr’s loan move to Cremonese
Tottenham Hotspur had an agreement with Serie A side Cremonese for Pape Matar Sarr. However, Antonio Conte blocked the Senegalese’s move to the Italian outfit.
Sarr signed for Spurs last summer from FC Metz. However, the 19-year-old stayed on loan with the Ligue 1 outfit for a season before coming to North London.
Cremonese were interested in taking the Senegalese on loan this transfer window. However, speaking to CuoreGrigiorosso, via The Spurs Web (h/t football.london), the newly promoted Serie A side’s general manager revealed Conte stopped Sarr’s loan move to Italy.
“We had the agreement in principle with Sarr of Tottenham, but then an injury led Conte to stop everything.”
Rodrigo Bentancur suffered a head injury in the match against Nottingham Forest. The Uruguayan was replaced by Djed Spence in stoppage time. It’s being suggested the former Juventus midfielder’s knock was a catalyst to Conte stopping Sarr’s potential move.
The North London side have a long season ahead of them in 2022-23. Tottenham have an abundance of talent that will be on a plane to Qatar for the World Cup for their respective national sides.
Clubs around Europe have been dealt a tough schedule. Tottenham have to contend with multiple midweek fixtures until November due to the Champions League.
As such, squad depth is important. The 2022/23 campaign will evidently take a toll on players’ fitness. With the overload comes the threat of picking up injuries.
While Sarr hasn’t yet made his debut for Spurs, the 19-year-old played a lot of competitive football for Metz last season. The Senegalese featured in 33 Ligue 1 games for the French outfit.

Conte currently has other injury issues to think about as well. Oliver Skipp is yet to feature for Tottenham this campaign. The 21-year-old has been unavailable for some time now. With a long season ahead, it’d be wise to keep Sarr in North London for the time being.
