Marseille want Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr on loan

Olympique de Marseille (OM) are apparently keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr on loan this summer.

Sarr was signed by Spurs in the summer of 2021 and was loaned back to FC Metz instantly for the following season. He failed to get any meaningful playing time this campaign, be it under Antonio Conte or the interim managers that followed.

According to French outlet Footmercato, Marseille want to sign him on a temporary deal but Sarr is said to be happy in England. This is despite the fact that he featured just 14 times across competitions for the Lilywhites.

More surprisingly, those appearances amounted to just 467 minutes of first-team action this season. A truly appalling number for a 20-year-old midfielder who was signed for a fee of 14.6million Pounds.

What next for Sarr?

A move to Marseille could be useful for Sarr if they assure him that he will get playing time there. After all, Spurs are set to see Rodrigo Bentancur return for next season from his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso are set to return from their loan spells this summer, as it stands, to increase competition in midfield. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, meanwhile, continues to be our main man in that area.

Hence, Sarr could use a season outside the Premier League to return to a league where he played for Metz and made his name. One can’t help but think Spurs’ potential new permanent manager could play a role in any such moves.

There is every chance they want Sarr in the team to use in cup games or even as a player to provide direct competition to first-team options. On the contrary, they could also deem him surplus to requirements, in which case, a loan would make sense.

We don’t have his contract situation to worry about, with his deal in N17 running until the summer of 2026 (Transfermarkt).
