Aston Villa have a free run at signing Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus target Pau Torres

Journalist Rudy Galetti has claimed that Aston Villa have no concrete competition from Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus for the signature of Villarreal star Pau Torres. He will enter the final year of his contract next month (Transfermarkt).

The Spanish centre-back has been impressive for the Yellow Submarine in recent seasons – the club he has been at all his life, apart from a loan spell at Malaga in between. The 26-year-old is now in his prime years.

He is left-footed, sure in possession, capable of defending with minimal mistakes and playing the ball out of the back. Torres can slot in the left centre-back position at Tottenham with minimal fuss.

We lack a quality player in central defence who plays with his left foot, with Clement Lenglet’s loan spell from Barcelona set to expire. However, Galetti has claimed that both Spurs and Juventus have internal and external matters to resolve for now.

Torres to Spurs?

He says that Tottenham will not make major moves in the market without a sporting director – a position that has been vacant since Fabio Paratici’s exit earlier this year after a FIFA ban. Galetti exclusively told GiveMeSport:

“Aston Villa are] On his track at the moment. There are also Tottenham and Juventus but Spurs, before finalising any market choice, have to wait for the new director. At the same time, the Bianconeri for different reason have yet to understand how all the extra issues will end up.

“And at the moment, they cannot make any operation on the transfer market. So, we can say that Aston Villa have no concrete competitors in this moment.”

It makes sense to wait until we have the proper personnel in place to make an approach in the transfer window. Antonio Conte and Paratici seemed to have worked in tandem to sign several important players in the last few transfer windows.

But that pairing has now been broken. Ange Postecoglu is set to become Tottenham’s new manager and it is imperative we now appoint a sporting director as well.

Otherwise, we can miss out on key targets. Unai Emery, of course, has a link with Torres given their nationality and time together at Villarreal. Hopefully, the prestige of playing for a ‘big six’ club in England convinces him to look in our direction and wait for our approach.
