Tottenham defender Ben Davies is a star who continues to revel in being an underdog

Ben Davies has been a star in both Tottenham and Wales. Yet, it is no surprise that he is called a reluctant star because he actively avoids the limelight. Davies is not celebrated like some of his peers, and it is partly by design. However, his talent inevitably shines through in the past and even more in the present.

He is a player that his team cannot do without. Not only does he make the most important defensive contributions for his team, but he is also calm and composed in stressful situations. Getting the captain’s armband for his country is now putting him in the limelight. He has, however, always been a humble player.

His humility becomes so obvious by an incident narrated by Alan Tate. Despite rising through the ranks at an unprecedented speed, Davies was very insistent on driving his old Volkswagen Polo which was a great source of amusement for the rest of the players. Tate said, speaking in an interview as quoted by the BBC, that he was the only player in the team who had ‘wind-down windows’.

“You could see from training with us he was always someone who wanted to learn. He was one of those young lads to ask questions and took on information and was really diligent around the game. On the whole he was quiet and, to be fair, you usually are as the young lad breaking into the team. Ben was what you see now.”

“That came from Ashley Williams.

Ash was big on his cars and stuff, so I think he was the first one who noticed Ben had the wind-down windows and he didn’t let him forget it. That is, he reminded him every minute of every day!”

Even if this wasn’t enough, Davies has always been regarded as a player who was ready to learn. He had the opportunity to call his heroes his teammates early on in his career and flourished in all formats. He has often been called a “top player with a sensible head”.

A natural leader

Davies has been dubbed a natural player because of his demeanour which is something that the player deserves. Alan Tate has said that he has a natural influence on the squad because he is amazing on the field, but also knows how to have a good time. It is evident that he only cares about playing well and not the limelight.

It is expected that he will captain Wales against Davies before Ramsey returns. He was, however, also close to being named permanent captain. The manager Robert Page has also said that Davies will be named captain for sure whenever a change in leadership is made for Wales.

Davies will return to the sidelines, the way the reluctant superstar likes it, if Ramsey makes a quicker recovery. Till then, however, it is expected that one will see the Welsh player in the limelight, hopefully getting some of the fame he so obviously deserves.
