Assessing Tottenham January 2024 Signings
Tottenham have taken massive strides under Ange Postecoglou this season, and while the summer was about signing level-raisers, the winter transfer window gave us a glimpse of how far Spurs have come this season as they signed players that provide depth in certain positions.
Daniel Levy & Co. entered a new era with the appointment of the Australian last summer, moving on from big-name coaches and rather signing a process coach who can sustain growth. Ironically, the process coach has made more progress over a shorter term than any of the big names coaches made during their tenure at the club.
Spurs brought two players in the winter window, with Timo Werner making a temporary move to the N17 from RB Leipzig and Tottenham beating out a hijack attempt from Bayern Munich to land Romanian international Radu Dragusin in a £26.7 million (€31 million) deal from Genoa.
We look into mid-season arrivals to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with both suffering contrasting fortunes owing to variable factors.
Here we rate Spurs January 2024 signings:
Timo Werner – 7/10
The German international was expected to come as a back-up into the striking role to Richarlison, especially with skipper Son away from club duties to represent South Korea in Asia Cup when the 28-year-old was signed at N17.
Werner has been far more than just another temporary space filler; he has been used on the left flank by Ange, just like Marco Rose used him at Leipzig. Timo Werner has found his attacking halo back in a sense, as he is always running behind the defenders and demanding the utmost focus of the backline while pressing at full acceleration and helping out on the defensive side of things.
He has been Spurs best player in a couple of games since he landed in North London and boasts a decent tally of two goals and two assists in eight Premier League appearances for Tottenham.
Former Chelsea ace has found himself in-middle of transfer tug of war since his move to N17 with likes of Manchester United looking to pounce on his services if Tottenham does not convert his loan into a permanent deal.
Radu Deagusin – N/A
It will be unfair to rate the 22-year-old based on his current position in the Spurs squad. He has been playing second fiddle to Romero and Micky van de Ven and found minutes difficult under belt till Micky was eventually injured his hamstring again.
Radu was exactly brought in for such a situation to ensure that Levy is not light at the back if someone pulls up again this season.
Dragusin looks fairly accommodating on the ball and isn’t shy about carrying the ball out of press, which may come in handy going forward. He is neither a finished product nor an integral part of Tottenham’s defence yet, but he could soon be both under Ange.
