Javier Mascherano second Lionel Messi in calling Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero ‘the best’
Speaking in an interview as quoted by Football. London, Argentina U-23s boss Javier Mascherano has labelled Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero as ‘one of the best centre-backs in the world’.
A few months ago, Lionel Messi made a similar remark on the 26-year-old who has been stellar for his national team both in the last Copa and the famous 2022 Fifa World Cup. No Argentinian fan would forget the sensational header to divert Emiliano Martinez’s last-minute save that kept them in the contest against France.
In fact, the Barcelona legend has never failed to recognize an opportunity to praise the Spurs vice-captain and even wanted the Spanish giants to sign his international teammate back in 2021 when he was still playing for them.
Mascherano who just selected his team for the Olympics in Paris left the Tottenham star out of his team, following a strenuous season where he has played non-stop for the club and also for his national team in the ongoing Copa America.
When he is not making rash decisions and just playing football as a proper central defender, there aren’t many defenders who can compete with the ex-Atalanta man but his decision-making has always been an issue throughout his career.
Speaking about the talented centre-back, here is what the ex-Barcelona defender had to say and it was nothing but praises
“Cuti Romero is among the best centre-backs in the world, if he’s not the best already. We don’t know what his ceiling is. He has demonstrated it throughout the entire season at Tottenham. He has been a cornerstone player for the team, incredibly important, and the Tottenham coach has repeatedly praised him in big matches. I believe he is at an incredible level, a player with impressive abilities who continues to grow and improve. The level he is reaching is impressive.”
Under Postecoglou, Romero really seems to have matured as a defender and doesn’t let his aggression get in the way of him playing his football. Except on the odd occasion, he mostly had a calm head on his shoulder last season.
The added responsibility of being Son Heung-min’s deputy alongside James Maddison seemed to have sobered the Argentinian international. In the long run, there is nothing more that Spurs fans would like than seeing a calm Romero.

This isn’t to say that he must lose his aggression but the 26-year-old must pick and choose his moments better. Other than this, we have a sensational centre-back on our hands and let’s hope we can retain him for a long time.
