Gray deal signals Spurs’ financial muscle – Can they flex it again?
Tottenham Hotspur just splashed the cash to sign Archie Gray earlier this week, and with significant money spent, finance expert Dan Plumley takes a look at the financial situation at White Hart Lane and whether the club is in the position to splurge another big money signing in the ongoing summer transfer window.
The North Londoners announced the acquisition of Archie Gray from Leeds United for £40 million, with defender Joe Rodon going to Elland Road for £10 million. Dan acknowledged that even if the aforementioned fee is to be paid by the club in one instalment, it is difficult to get the money out of Daniel Levy and Tottenham Hotspur.

He went on to appreciate the financial condition of Tottenham and how they have the leeway to spend the money owing to how well-run the club is financially. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Dan Plumley said:
“From Tottenham’s point of view, they are a club who can always spend if they want to. We always look at them as a well-run club financially, and they are quite hard in negotiations, so it’s not easy to get them to part with cash, even though there is a chance they can given their financial situation.”
“If this deal has been done upfront and all in one hit, it shows they can enter the market where they want to. Again, it’s a long-term contract, and it looks like there’s a real player in there. It could be a really good signing for them and typical of what they’ve looked to do.”
“When you look at a deal like that and Spurs in the market, you’ve always had them down as a club that can spend if they want to.”
While Spurs hardly give any room with the cash, when highly rated talent becomes available, you have to take a chance and seal the deal. That is exactly what Levy and Tottenham did when they signed Archie Gray from Leeds United early this week, despite the competition and hefty transfer fee.
