Betis mull Lo Celso repatriation amid financial woes
La Liga side Real Betis have been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso as the Spanish giants look to reunite with the Argentine maestro. They have reciprocated their interest by maintaining informal contacts with the former PSG star about a return to the Estadio Benito Villamarín.
Spurs signed Giovani Lo Celso in a €60 million move following a prodigious season at Real Betis. The move, at the time, was regarded as an eagerly anticipated headline transfer, with the now-28-year-old coming in to take the creative wheel from Eriksen. However, in retrospect, none of the parties have benefited from the transfer, as the Argentine has failed to find his feet in the English top tier.
Spurs eye sale as Levy looks to cash in
Gio has been scraping through his contract at N17 with loan moves away from North London; however, when Ange Postecoglou decided to keep him at White Hart Lane last summer, many suggested his revival was around the corner. However, he never found opportunities to prove himself consistently on the first team.
The Australian gaffer could only hand Lo Celso an aggregate of 597 minutes, coming in a spell of 24 appearances across all competitions. And Lo Celso could not find his purple patch to impress the Spurs enough to keep compounding opportunities his way.
With a lack of minutes under his belt at N17, Gio is looking at his future beyond his current employers. Real Betis have maintained ‘informal contacts’ with the player, per Estadio Deportivo. Any probable deal that takes Lo Celso back to his former employers looks complicated owing to financial problems at Estadio Benito Villamarín.
Betis will have to sell Nabil Fekir to the Saudi Pro League to have the option of bringing Lo Celso this summer.
The Argentine’s contract at Hotspur Way is due next summer, and they will be looking to take advantage of the situation to secure his services for a bargain fee.
