Barcelona show interest in re-signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal
According to Mundo Deportivo via Foot Mercato, Barcelona have joined the race to re-sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal amidst interest from Serie A giants AC Milan.
Spurs signed the 25-year-old Brazilian fullback from the Catalan giants in 2021 for a €25m fee. His time since then at the North London club has been on a steady upwards curve with the player consistently working on his game and improving his levels.
With Emerson Royal now looking to move on to pastures new, AC Milan have been negotiating a deal for quite sometime now without reaching an agreement with Spurs. Now, Barcelona have registered interest in their former player.
The Brazilian international hardly ever played for the Catalan club though. Barcelona co-owned him for a few seasons with Real Betis but when he moved to the Nou Camp, they were forced to sell him due to their financial predicament.
Currently, Hansi Flick’s squad doesn’t have a natural right-back with Joao Cancelo’s loan spell ending and no extension being announced yet. However, they do have Hector Fort from the academy who looked really impressive last season.
More importantly, they also have ex-Sevilla defender Jules Kounde who has adapted his game to become one of the best right-backs in the world, despite primarily being a central defender. He has arguably been France’s best player in the Euros so far.
All factors considered, along with the fact that Barcelona aren’t financially blessed at the moment, this just seems like a desperate attempt from the player’s agent to drum up interest using the Spanish giants’ name and bait AC Milan into making a quick decision.
Right now, it would be hasty on Spurs’ part to read too much into Barcelona’s interest. The only real offer we have on the table is that of the Italian club’s and understandably, we are holding out for a higher fee.

It increasingly looks like a matter when rather than if Emerson Royal will leave Spurs this summer. Let’s wait and see if Barcelona act upon their ‘supposed’ interest or if this is just a ruse from the player’s entourage.
