Ben Jacobs expects Tottenham to rival Chelsea for Jonathan David
Speaking to The London is Blue Podcast, renowned journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that he expects Tottenham Hotspur to rival Chelsea for the signature of Canadian striker Jonathan David.
The talented 24-year-old striker is currently on Copa America duty where his nation find themselves in the semifinals facing defending champions Argentina. Beating the World Champions is going to be no easy task.
Having played for LOSC Lille for around four seasons now, David seems ready for the next big move in his career. He has outgrown the French club in every sense and needs to be playing for the elite in Europe.
Chelsea and Tottenham in the Premier League are willing to offer David a platform to take his career to the next level. Although neither club can offer Champions League football at the moment, we are building an impressive project towards it. The lesser said about the Blues’ project, the better!
A pacy striker who loves to run behind the opposition defence, it’s David’s killer instinct that makes him a special talent. He is not afraid to get into attacking positions and has a natural killer instinct to find the back of the net.
Speaking about the situation surrounding David and the London clubs, here is what Jacobs had to say
“As far as strikers are concerned, the most experienced name with pedigree at the moment is Jonathan David who is available at a steal.”
“I’d keep an eye on Spurs as well and I’m told that Lille will accept well under £30m, around €30m instead of pounds, so around £25m, so Chelsea could be one to watch there.”
Canadian manager John Herdman was full of praise for the 24-year-old ahead of the last World Cup. Here is what he had to say – “Jonathan is one of those silent assassins. He’s very clued up tactically and that’s what I really enjoy about Jonathan, he really wants to get into the details of the game and understand the pressing tactics.”
It is no secret that Spurs are yet to replace Harry Kane. Ange Postecoglou was smart in deciding against signing a number nine last season as no striker could have filled the massive boots of the English captain. However, a season has passed and the wounds won’t be as raw.

In Jonathan David, Spurs will be signing a striker for the next seven or eight years to come if he can continue his Ligue 1 form in the Premier League. At the price he is being offered, this is a no-brainer for Tottenham. Let’s hope we can get this over the line.
