Atlético Madrid monitoring the situation of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg
According to Mundo Deportivo via Sports Witness, Atlético Madrid are currently the “best possibility” for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
The Denmark international is rumoured to be nearing an exit from the north London club after a season on the periphery of the first team under Ange Postecoglou.
Despite not being one of the first names on the team sheet, the 28-year-old has received praise from his Australian coach.
“With Pierre, he is a professional and very determined to win a spot in the team. He presents himself well every day and over a 38-game season all of these guys will get an opportunity at some point. What they do with that is up to them.”
Postecoglou talking about Højbjerg last year, as quoted by The Independent.
It’s this professionalism that makes Højbjerg a target of Diego Simeone’s Atleti, who despite being linked with the likes of Celtic’s Matt O’Riley, Feyenoord’s Mats Wieffer (who has since moved to Brighton and Hove Albion), and Atalanta’s Éderson, find Højbjerg in the most favourable position for a move, given the Danish midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his £100k-a-week contract at Spurs.
Crucial for Spurs that Højbjerg leaves
With the arrival of Archie Gray from Leeds United and given the way Postecoglou used him last season despite his praises, it is clear that Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is surplus to requirements at Spurs and so the club need to find a solution.
Now in the last year of his contract, Højbjerg will be looking for long-term security, also keen on getting that one last big contract as he nears 30 years of age.
All in all, the equation is simple for Spurs: move Højbjerg on as soon as an adequate offer arrives.
