Emerson Royal returns to training at Spurs amidst AC Milan interest
Emerson Royal is back at Spurs as the 2024/25 pre-season kicks off despite being heavily linked with a move away from the north London club.
Despite not being short on self-confidence, the Brazil international has found fitting under Ange Postecoglou stylistically difficult amidst constant criticism for his ability to defend. On Instagram, the defender put up a post with the caption “The king is back !!”
According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Royal is likely on his way to AC Milan.
The 25-year-old arrived at Spurs from Barcelona three summers ago on the back of a £25.8m move and two very promising seasons at Real Betis.
Despite fleeting moments of brilliance, he has found life hard in England as he now evaluates his options for greener pastures outside the UK.
As things stand, the Milan-linked fullback has in place a £40k-per-week contract at Spurs that still has two years remaining.
Emerson is a player Spurs can afford to lose
Last season made it abundantly clear that Emerson is not a crucial part of Postecoglou’s plans.
With Perdo Porro the Australian coach’s prime-choice right-back for now, and Archie Gray having been roped in from Leeds United, Emerson’s exit seems all but confirmed.

Obviously, he is not a bad player as he demonstrated during his time at Betis, but like many of his colleagues, Emerson needs a club where the style of play fits his own. Therefore, it’s in the best interest of all parties involved for Emerson to find a new home.
