Tottenham Hotspur set to miss out on Napoli-bound Alessandro Buongiorno
According to renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur are set to miss out on talented Italian centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno with the player on his way to Napoli.
Napoli have beaten the likes of Inter, Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur to his signature as Antonio Conte, the ex-Spurs manager looks to kickstart his era in charge of the Serie A club. In Buongiorno, they’ve landed on a gem.
Naples rate the player very highly and rightly so. They have handed him a release clause worth €70m starting from July 2027. If Buongiorno’s career plays out as one envisions, many clubs won’t hesitate to trigger the same when it comes to that. In fact, he was described as ‘very intelligent tactically’ by one of his former coaches.
Tottenham have been in the market for a new centre-back ahead of next season. They have three top-class options – Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin. Ange Postecoglou is looking to add a fourth to the roster.
Considering the quality that Buongiorno seemingly possesses, he is likely to thrive under a manager like Antonio Conte. The ex-Spurs manager builds a team fundamentally strong in defence and that is exactly what the 25-year-old possesses.
Having already made his debut for Italy under Roberto Mancini, things are looking promising. In a way, Spurs will not be happy about the fact that Conte got one over them in the negotiations for the player.
That said, Tottenham’s interest in Buongiorno did not seem advanced at any point. He might have been one of the many names on the club’s shortlist that they will now have to strike out. This doesn’t hurt the club much.
Of late, every time a top Serie A talent is linked with an exit, Tottenham find themselves in the mix. They have achieved quasi-Italian status and look to be one of the best scouters in the Italian top flight for talent.
