Rodrigo Bentancur might miss the opening matches for Tottenham Hotspur
After being involved in the clash with Colombian fans at Copa America, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is likely to miss his initial matches for the club in the Premier League. The Spurs star has joined the fight with Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez and FIFA is considering a global ban for the players included in the fight, per Sun.
The Uruguay national team had a remarkable performance in the Copa America. Marcelo Bielsa’s side hasn’t tasted the bitterness of failure until the semifinals as they have advanced into the knockout stage as group champions by winning all the group stage games.
Uruguay faced their all-time rivals Brazil in the quarterfinal of the campaign, where Dorival Junior’s team failed to secure the last-four spot by losing in penalty shootouts. In the semifinal against Colombia, Uruguay struggled to score despite creating chances, with Darwin Núñez and Luis Suárez coming close but ultimately failing to convert.
Uruguay’s defence held strong, but they ultimately lost 1-0 to Colombia, ending their run in the tournament. Following the defeat, a violent brawl erupted between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
According to Uruguay defender Jose Maria Gimenez, the Uruguayan players felt that their families seated near Colombian fans were in jeopardy after the game. Uruguay players Darwin Nunez, Gimenez and other players climbed into the stands to protect their family members and were involved in the fight with Colombian fans.
Tottenham ace Bentancur was also involved in the encounter with his teammates. FIFA is set to take strict action against the Uruguayan players, and it may affect their matches for the club in the upcoming season.
Bentancur to miss opening matches
The Uruguay international was part of the North London club from 2022. He had a decent performance with the club in the last campaign under manager Ange Postecoglou. He has scored one goal and provided an assist in 24 games for the Lillywhites in the last campaign. He has also played a key role in the midfield.
Ange has already started to reinforce the squad with new additions, The Aussie tactician signed two new young midfielders, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, to the North London club. He has also considered Bentancur as a key player in the squad for the upcoming season, but the potential ban for the Uruguayan will be a huge blow for the club.
The midfielder could miss the opening matches of the Premier League and also Europa League qualifiers. Despite his absence, the manager would be forced to include the new signings as midfield options for the upcoming season, and their inexperience in the top-flight league may affect the performance of the team.
Spurs could look out for an experienced midfielder in the summer transfer to replace Bentancur, as Ange knows the opening games are really important for the initial boost in the club.
