Borussia Dortmund eye a move for Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon
Borussia Dortmund had a highly successful continental campaign last term, reaching the finals of the UEFA Champions League before succumbing to Real Madrid. A key player in their journey was left-back Ian Maatsen, who made a significant impact in the latter half of the campaign. However, Maatsen has since returned to Chelsea and has now secured a move to Aston Villa, leaving Dortmund in search of a new left-back. Enter Sergio Reguilon, the Lilywhite defender who has fallen out of favour under Ange Postecoglou.
According to Ben Jacobs, Dortmund are eyeing Reguilon as a potential replacement for the Dutch left-back who is now a Villan. Here is what the journalist had to say:
“The only thing I would say in terms of a new suitor is that I’ve heard in the last 24 hours that Dortmund could be one to watch.”
“We know that Dortmund wanted Ian Maatsen, he’s now a Villa player and Dortmund are therefore looking for a player in that position and internally they have discussed Reguilon as a possibility.”
Sergio to Germany?
Reguilon has not featured in a league game for Tottenham since April 2022. Since then, his career has seen him spend a season on loan at Atletico Madrid, followed by two half-season loans at Manchester United and Brentford. Despite his previous promise, the door seems firmly shut on a return to the Spurs’ first team. With Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies currently holding down the left-back position, Reguilon’s future at the club appears bleak.
For Dortmund, acquiring Reguilon could be a smart move. The Spaniard has experience at top clubs in La Liga and the Premier League and has shown glimpses of his potential. Dortmund’s need for a competent left-back to fill the void left by Maatsen makes Reguilon a viable candidate. His attacking prowess and speed down the flanks could fit well with Dortmund’s style of play, providing an additional dimension to their offensive tactics.
Reguilon’s lack of recent game time at Spurs might be a concern, but a fresh start at a club like Dortmund, who have a knack for rejuvenating careers [hi Sanch], could be exactly what he needs. The Bundesliga’s emphasis on attacking football could see Reguilon thrive, offering him the chance to re-establish himself as a top-tier left-back.

From Tottenham’s perspective, offloading Reguilon would surely make sense given their current squad composition and the player’s lack of integration into Postecoglou’s plans. Moving him on would not only free up wages but could also provide some funds for other potential transfers. Spurs have shown interest in strengthening other areas, and letting go of a player who no longer fits could aid their summer business.
