Tottenham are set to make a serious push to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney
According to Give Me Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are set to make a serious push to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney having identified him as the number nine target for this summer.
One of the best strikers going around in the Premier League at the moment, Toney is currently on international duty with the England national team as they look to beat Spain in the finals and bring home the trophy.
The Brentford striker has played a few minutes off the bench for Gareth Southgate but has had a huge impact in the Round of 16 clash when England looked down and out before making a resurgent comeback to make it to the quarterfinals.
Tottenham have failed to sign a new striker ever since Harry Kane left the club last summer to join Bayern Munich. Ange Postecoglou decided to go into that season without a natural number nine but that is unlikely to be the case now.
In many ways, Ivan Toney is similar to Harry Kane. The 28-year-old striker might not be as prolific as his national team captain in terms of goalscoring but is excellent and dropping deep and linking play. He is also an excellent penalty taker.
Ange Postecoglou’s team works well when the players function in their respective roles in a way the Australian tactician expects. He would be able to give Ivan Toney the perfect conditions to succeed, especially with runners like Son Heung-min and Brennan Johnson on either side of him.
Bees manager Thomas Frank has always admired what Ivan Toney brings to the table and here is what he had to say about the English striker – “I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group. He’s got that unique emotional intelligence to be aware of all the players, and every staff member.”
Having spent his time at Brentford, Toney is at a stage in his career where it’s ‘now or never’ when it comes to securing a big-money move to a Champions League club. The 28-year-old has outgrown the Bees.

Being English, he helps Tottenham towards the squad registration rules as well. All things considered, if Spurs can agree a decent fee with Brentford, this move is a no-brainer. Let’s wait and see if they get this deal over the line.
