Tottenham Hotspur set to miss out on Aston Villa-bound Jaden Philogene
According to renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa are closing in on signing Hull City star winger Jaden Philogene, pipping the likes of Tottenham Hotspur.
Romano gave his patented ‘Here we go’ for Villa’s pursuit of the 22-year-old winger. Despite being linked with high-profile clubs like Tottenham and Barcelona, it is Unai Emery’s team that have won the race to his signature.
A product of Aston Villa’s academy, Philogene was on the club’s books until last year. However, they let the player leave for Hull City and the player really exploded in the Championship last season.
Having realised their mistake of letting him go, Villa have acted fast and secured his signature yet again. It now only seems to be a matter of time before Philogene becomes an official player for the club and Spurs can now move on.
It remains to be seen if the 22-year-old can recapture the form he showed in the Championship in the English top flight. All said and done, the Premier League is a different ball game and the stakes are much higher.
Philogene will also be competing with teammates who are of a much higher quality than what he faced at Hull City. It would be difficult for him to secure a place in the starting XI, especially when it comes to Aston Villa.
Under Unai Emery, Villa have gone on to establish themselves as one of the most consistent teams in the Premier League. The Spanish tactician has done a remarkable job of establishing the club as one of the toughest ones to face.
Philogene would have aligned with Tottenham’s philosophy of signing youngsters with a high ceiling. Almost all of Spurs’ recent signings have shown a very clear pattern and it remains to be seen if they pursue another winger.
