“Who would want to?”- Former Tottenham star believesfirst XI ace is disinterested at Spurs

Cristian Romero has been underwhelming for Tottenham Hotspur since returning from a long-term injury

Tottenham Hotspur suffered their 18th defeat of the Premier League and missed yet another opportunity to climb the Premier League table with a 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest on Monday evening.

The Lilywhites sit just one point from 17th place in what has been an incredibly dismal campaign for Ange Postecoglou. An unprecedented injury situation and chronic inconsistency have plagued the North Londoners. Despite the return of several key players since late February, performance levels and results in the Premier League have barely improved.

The return of defensive lynchpin Cristian Romero has seen Spurs collect only four points from seven games. The 2022 World Cup winner has endured a tough season like the majority of his teammates, failing to produce consistent performances and help Ange Postecoglou’s team achieve stability in terms of results.

The 26-year-old has made some high profile-mistakes and bad decisions off the ball, notably in the recent 4-2 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux. The defender was at fault for the third goal, with Rayan Ait-Nouri robbing him off possession and squaring it to Jorgen Strand Larsen for a simple tap in.

And Cristian Romero was all over the place in the defeat to Nottingham Forest. He was caught out of position in Forest’s second goal; Chris Wood peeling away smartly and positioning himself between Romero and Micky van de Ven to head the ball in the back of the net amid Guglielmo Vicario’s weak attempt to punch the ball away.

Speaking on talkSPORT after the defeat to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara couldn’t hide his frustration at Romero’s display by stating that the South American star didn’t want to be at the club.

“I don’t think he wants to be there at the moment, I don’t think he wants to be in this team. I don’t think he wants to play in this time. Who would want to play in this team? Are they playing in this team?”, Jamie O’Hara said to a caller on the talkSPORT show.

Tottenham could lose either Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven this summer
Tottenham defender Cristian Romero is wanted by Atletico Madrid

It is not surprising that Romero has been called out for at Tottenham as a result of his league outings in recent weeks. The Argentine did miss a huge chunk of the campaign with injuries, from mid-November through to the start of March, seeing him feature just once.

Despite him struggling with fitness and form, the Cordoba-born talent has still piqued the interest of several European clubs. Atletico Madrid have been showing the most interest since last month, with Diego Simeone holding private talks with the centre-half.

When fully fit, Romero is among the best central defenders in the Premier League. However, with the World Cup winner not keen to stay at the club and his performances of late not warranting him a regular starting berth in Ange’s XI, Daniel Levy must cash him in this summer before his stock further dips.
