Tottenham star Brennan Johnson gives early fitness update ahead of Europa League final

Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson drops fitness update ahead of Europa League final against Manchester United in Bilbao

Thousands of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United fans are flocking to Bilbao to witness the clash between the two Premier League sides, who are both looking to end torrid seasons on a high by winning the UEFA Europa League on May 21.

Ange Postecoglou’s future at N17 has been the talking point for several months now. He is under immense pressure to provide Spurs with the European trophy after a disastrous domestic campaign that currently sees them languish just a spot above the relegation zone with one game left to play.

A win at San Mames would end the club’s 17-year-long trophy drought and secure Champions League qualification for next campaign, whilst providing a big boost in terms of spending during the summer transfer window.

Brennan Johnson was taken out by Sergio Reguilon in a training session last week

Keeping that in mind, Ange Postecoglou needs his best players available to prevail in the Europa League final. Following injuries to James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski, the Greek-Aussie tactician’s squad is already light in terms of quality and squad depth heading into the Lilywhites’ biggest game of the campaign.

There were also recent doubts over Brennan Johnson following a recent training ground incident. A training ground footage from last week appeared to show Sergio Reguilon taking down Brennan Johnson after slipping. Ange after that incident expressed no concerns, although he hoped and prayed to football gods that the Welshman’s knock was not serious.

With nothing to play for in the Premier League, the Spurs gaffer rotated his squad for the game against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Friday evening. Tottenham lost the dead rubber 2-0, and luckily there weren’t any fresh injury concerns to report. Johnson came off the bench in the 87th minute against Aston Villa, as Ange protected his key players for the big game in Bilbao.

Now, the Wales international has put any lingering concerns to bed. In an interview with Football London, Johnson said on Tuesday:

“No problems. It was a bit sore at the time, but no worries there.”

Ange Postecoglou will want all his best players available for the Europa League final vs Man United

Johnson being fit and available for the game is a big boost for the North Londoners. The 23-year-old has been accused by certain sections of fans for going missing in games, yet he is the club’s top scorer this season with 17 goals across all competitions. He has also seven assists to his name, demonstrating the creative edge to his game.

The Welsh forward’s pace and directness could be a huge weapon that Ange will want to use against a shaky Man United defence. Whether the 59-year-old tactician decides to start Johnson on the right flank or brings him off the bench against a tiring United backline will be an interesting watch on Wednesday.
