Reliable journalist maps out three priority areas Tottenham Hotspur are planning to reinforce during the summer transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur are facing a mass exodus of players this summer as they plot a potential overhaul of their first-team squad.

Qualification for the Champions League next season was seen as crucial to their summer plans with several players targeted. Ange Postecoglou and Co. have achieved their objective of qualifying for the Champions League by winning the Europa League trophy in Bilbao. They defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the final to end their long trophy scarcity.

Now, the Hotspur Way chiefs have started identifying the crucial areas of the squad that need addressing. A new central defender has been viewed as a priority, while efforts will be made to sign a new wide forward and a central midfielder when the transfer window reopens next month.

Tottenham are set for squad revamp after Europa League success

This is the viewpoint of Football Insider senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke. He has revealed that Tottenham will look to replace the players that depart from the squad in the summer and Champions League qualification should allow them to focus their attention on a “different set of targets”.

“A new centre-back will be a top priority for Spurs,” Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider.

“Especially if Cristian Romero leaves. Another forward or wide forward is going to be something Tottenham would like to bring, as well as a new central midfielder.

“So I expect it to be a busy window for Spurs. Obviously, they can look at a different set of targets now that they’ve got Champions League football.”

Getting Champions League football next season would open up a wide spectrum of targets for Tottenham. Had Ange Postecoglou’s side not won the Europa League, the club bosses would have had a limited set of targets to bring into the club on a reduced transfer budget.

Undoubtedly, a quality centre-back has to be a priority as a potential replacement for Cristian Romero, whose desire is to play in La Liga next season. The Argentine showed why he is regarded by many as one of the European continent’s best centre-backs with his colossal display against Man United in the Europa League final, so any player replacing him in the squad must have the personality and quality in abundance.

With Spurs open to listening to offers for Yves Bissouma as he enters the final year of his contract, a central midfielder is expected to be targeted as well. LOSC Lille’s Angel Gomes is among the top targets, and his potential free agency from next month onward makes him a bargain signing Tottenham would not want to lose out.

For now, a decision on Mathys Tel’s future is impending, and even if the club bosses decide to sign him permanently from Bayern Munich, a new wide forward to potentially replace both Richarlison and Timo Werner in the squad has to be on the agenda. Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze has been heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane.
