Ian Darke backs Tottenham to sign English star who can replace Europa League hero

Tottenham have earmarked Crystal Palace skipper to potentially replace exit-bound Cristian Romero this summer
There is no surprise that Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to bolster their defensive ranks in the summer.
Spurs have been defensively all over the place throughout the campaign. Persistent injury problems at the back have not allowed partnerships to grow, leading to constant chopping and changing of personnel. This is one of the reasons why the North Londoners have struggled to carve out positive results in the Premier League and head into the final game of the season against Brighton in 17th spot.
Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have failed to stay fit for large periods of the season. This massively hampered Spurs’ defensive organisation and ability to see out games. It was reported earlier this month that the Europa League final would be Cristian Romero’s final game in a Tottenham shirt.
The Argentina international looks set to end his time in North London despite a Man of the Match display vs Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao. He wishes to play in La Liga in the future, with Spanish duo Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid battling for the centre-back’s signature.

Daniel Levy has been scouring the market to potentially replace Romero and is understood to be keen on Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi. The Lilywhites have revived their interest in the 24-year-old after seeing their shock £70million bid rejected during the January transfer window.
Now, famous commentator and analyst Ian Darke has backed Tottenham to make a deal happen. He has advised the N27-based outfit to sell Romero and replace him with Marc Guehi before the new season commences.
“Romero has been patchy, he has been injured a lot of the time, and the time is right to make a change,” Ian Darke exclusively told Tottenham News.
“I think whoever signed Guehi, if he were to be sold by Palace, it would be a superb signing. I think he is an ultra-solid, good defender who is probably going to be in England’s team for a while.
“If you are a recruitment guy, you are looking for players who give you seven out of 10, maybe more, each week, he is like that, you can rely on him to put in a good shift every week. Tottenham have not had many players who have been able to do that this season.”

Technically sound, strong in the air, tigerish in the challenge and Premier League proven, Guehi is an ideal option to replace Romero in Ange’s squad. The England international has grown leaps and bounds in recent years, establishing himself as one of the reliable players in his position in the top flight.

He is still 24 and certainly has his best years ahead of him, something Spurs must look to tap into. Having qualified for the Champions League, Tottenham now are in a great position to attract top talents, and a player of Guehi’s calibre, knowhow and leadership skills would make a huge difference to their defensive unit next season and beyond.
As he is about to enter the final year of his contract, Crystal Palace will not risk losing Guehi on a free transfer next year having known for some time now that he does not want to extend his deal. So, they will want to cash him in this year, and our club chiefs must do everything possible to get a deal over the line.
