Tottenham legend blames Manchester United for Daniel Levy’s sacking of Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham have parted ways with Ange Postecoglou following the Europa League success

Tottenham have finally managed to end the anxious wait surrounding the managerial situation at N17. The Lilywhites have relieved Ange Postecoglou from his duties following a ‘review of performances.’ The North London club decided to part ways with the Australian tactician after taking the disastrous Premier League campaign into consideration.

However, it is fair to say that the decision to sack the ex-Celtic boss has not gone down well with the fans and the players. Big Ange had finally gotten the fans back on his side after delivering a historic result last month. The 59-year-old managed to end the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy by winning the Europa League against all odds.

Ange Postecoglou had announced earlier in the campaign that he always won a trophy in his second season at a club. He walked the talk and managed to bring European silverware back to N17 after beating Manchester United in the Europa League final. One can only guess whether the decision to sack Big Ange is right or not… but it is fair to say that the Australian had earned the right to build on the Europa League success in the summer.

Tottenham would have taken a huge risk by retaining Ange Postecoglou

Daniel Levy is under a lot of scrutiny from the fans after the Englishman decided to sack Ange Postecoglou on Friday. The Spurs chairman is facing a backlash on social media and the mood around N17 has already dampened just two weeks after the club won its first major trophy in 17 years. Was it the right decision to sack Big Ange? Only time will tell if the decision was correct or not.

However, ex-Spurs manager Harry Redknapp believes that Man United’s previous mistakes helped Levy take the final decision. Speaking on talkSPORT, Redknapp said,

“Overall, I suppose Daniel has looked at it and is thinking, ‘hang on’. Man United kept Ten Hag last year after winning a cup and they went out and bought some players under his leadership and then suddenly they sack him. Were they going to take that chance with Ange?”

The ex-manager added,

“Bringing four or five new players and suddenly things haven’t improved in the league by Christmas, then they have to sack him and are stuck with the players he brought in. He looks a good guy and I’d have liked to have seen him given more of a chance but it was never going to happen once Daniel didn’t come out and support him.”

Harry Redknapp suggested that Man United’s mistake of retaining Ten Hag last year prompted Daniel Levy to sack Ange Postecoglou following the Europa League success. The ex-manager insisted that it was a risk to bring in new players for Big Ange in the summer as the Lilywhites would have been stuck with them if the Australian was sacked midway through next season. Redknapp added that Ange Postecoglou is a good manager but he was always going to be sacked after Daniel Levy did not come out and support him after the Europa League win.

Now, it remains to be seen who replaces Ange Postecoglou at the helm for next season. It was reported earlier that Brentford boss Thomas Frank is the leading candidate to takeover the reigns at N17. If that is the case, then the Danish manager has a huge task in his hands to get the fans and players back on board following Big Ange’s sack.
