Thomas Gravesen urges Tottenham to sign €60m rated Sporting star; he is already on club’s radar

Morten Hjulmand might swap Sporting for Tottenham in the coming weeks for next season

Tottenham are looking to bring in reinforcements in the summer after a disastrous Premier League campaign. The Lilywhites managed to save their blushes in the end by winning the Europa League against all odds. But it is fair to suggest that winning silverware does not overshadow the unacceptable domestic form that the North London club endured.

A massive squad overhaul is needed in the summer as Spurs look to build on the Europa league success next season. However, the Lilywhites are forced to adopt the ‘sell-to-buy’ policy as the club finished the season just a place above the relegation zone in the Premier League. This basically forces the North London club to cash-in on underperforming players in the summer to generate funds for new arrivals.

A lot of players failed to perform consistently in domestic competitions for Tottenham. One of the main reasons for the club’s struggles this season was the midfield area. The Lilywhites struggled to control games in tight situations, and were often overrun in the middle of the pitch by their opposition. Key starters like Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur struggled to break down play and control the tempo of the game.

It was reported earlier this week that Tottenham are interested in signing Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP. The Denmark international is keen to test himself in a new environment, and has his eyes set on a Premier League move. The aforementioned report also suggested that Sporting are looking to gather around €60m from his sale in the summer.

Now, ex-Real Madrid player Thomas Gravesen has urged the Lilywhites to pull out all stops for the 25-year-old. Speaking to Viaplay (via Sport Witness), Gravesen said,

“He is a captain of calibre. Frank was with Norgaard for several years, and Hjulmand is an improved version and is even younger. That is why I think Frank’s first big purchase for Tottenham should be Hjulmand.”

Thomas Gravesen insists that Morten Hjulmand has all the leadership qualities to become a captain in the future. The ex-Real Madrid player also adds that the Lilywhites must focus on signing the Sporting midfielder as he would flourish under fellow Dane Thomas Frank. Gravesen also suggests that Hjulmand is an ‘improved version’ of Spurs target Christian Norgaard.

It remains to be seen what Daniel Levy decides to do in the transfer market in the coming weeks. Signing Morten Hjulmand would mean that Yves Bissouma would lose his position in the starting eleven next season. Bringing in the 25-year-old would also elevate the quality in the middle of the pitch significantly. A deal can be done easily, but the Lilywhites would not be willing to pay the asking price for his services.
