Tottenham interested in £40m Liverpool star; too late to turn the tide?

Tottenham might miss out on signing Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah in the summer amid Bayer Leverkusen links

One of the first things that Tottenham need to address is the defensive problems that the club endured last season. The Lilywhites just did not have enough quality at the back, and the lack of squad depth affected the team’s performances in crucial games. With several players enduring long-term injuries midway through the season, Ange Postecoglou was forced to play inexperienced players at the back.

That was also one of the major reasons why the Australian tactician got the sack once the season ended. The Lilywhites were without Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for most parts of the season after the pair endured long-term injuries. With the games coming thick and fast, Big Ange was forced to look for alternatives and that hindered the progress of the team.

Backup defender Radu Dragusin was also forced to sit on the sidelines after enduring an ACL injury earlier this year. Given how bad the injury crisis was at N17, January signing Kevin Danso was also ruled out for a couple of months immediately after joining the North London club. Spurs cannot afford to go through next season without enough depth at the back as they look to compete on four fronts under Thomas Frank.

Tottenham are looking to revamp their defence in the summer as they kickstart a new era at N17. With Cristian Romero facing an uncertain future at the club and Radu Dragusin linked with a move to AC Milan, Daniel Levy is aiming to bring in a quality centre-back that could fill the void left behind by the pair.

As per TBR Football, Spurs are interested in signing Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in the summer. The Lilywhites are aiming to bolster their squad depth for next season and view the Englishman as the perfect player to fit into Thomas Frank’s system. However, the Reds are not keen to part ways with the 22-year-old as they view him as a crucial part of the squad.

Also, striking a deal to sign the Liverpool defender will not be easy for Tottenham. The aforementioned report suggests that Bayer Leverkusen are on the verge of agreeing a deal to land Quansah in the summer. Not only that, but the Merseyside club have also slammed an asking price of around £40m for his services, which is deemed to be high for Spurs to act on.

All-in-all, it looks like the Lilywhites will miss out signing the Englishman. Fans will hope that Daniel Levy shifts his focus on other defenders as the club aims to build on the Europa League success next season. It was reported earlier that Spurs are also interested in signing Lazio star Mario Gila in the summer and view him as an ideal replacement for Romero.

The time has come for Daniel Levy to act fast and land the defender if the club wants to close the gap on its rivals next season. Thomas Frank needs some time to put together his ideal lineup, and instant success is not something that the Danish tactician wants to guarantee. But bringing in the right players will surely help the club to reach its ultimate goal of winning the Premier League.
