“Very surprised”- Tottenham’s decision to buy talented forward on a permanent deal questioned; player struggled to impress at N17

Tottenham forward Mathys Tel needs to kick on next season and fix his spot in the starting eleven under Thomas Frank

Fans will be relieved to see that Tottenham finally managed to sign Mathys Tel on a permanent deal from Bayern Munich. The Frenchman clearly has a high ceiling, and fans will hope that he reaches his massive potential at N17 while donning the Lilywhite jersey in the coming years. Not only that, but the 20-year-old’s desire to stay at Hotspur Way just showed that he wants to prove himself in the Premier League.

Now, the ex-Bayern Munich forward must look to kick on under Thomas Frank as Spurs aim to kickstart a new era at N17. The talented forward has the chance to make the left-flank spot his own next season, as Heung-Min Son faces an uncertain future at the club. Tel’s contributions during the latter stages of last season proved to be effective as well, earning him a spot in the starting eleven under Ange Postecoglou.

But it is fair to say that the 20-year-old still has a lot of learning left to do. He is still raw in his decision-making process in the final third of the pitch, and lacks the efficiency in front of goal to be an out-and-out number nine. The Frenchman’s ability to play anywhere in the forward line will prove to be vital as he looks to make a name for himself at N17.

Was signing Mathys Tel on a permanent deal the right decision by Tottenham?

Tottenham forward Mathys Tel might not have done enough to prove he deserves to stay at N17 for six more years. However, the Frenchman’s talent and high ceiling is too good to not gamble on, and the transfer fee is also not deemed to be a problem for the Lilywhites. Not only that, but Thomas Frank is also keen to work with Tel and wants to bring out the best in the 20-year-old next season.

But Paul Robinson has now questioned Spurs’ decision to sign the ex-Bayern forward on a permanent deal. Speaking to Tottenham News, Robinson said,

“I thought he was poor on loan. I’m very surprised that they signed him on a permanent deal. He’s touted as one of the top young talents in Europe, but here’s the questions that I would always ask and I would always go back to: one, why are Bayern Munich so willing to let him go? Two, in January why were Tottenham the only team that were looking to take him and why did he go to a team that were fifth bottom in the Premier League at the time?”

Paul Robinson has suggested that Mathys Tel did not endure a successful loan spell at Tottenham and he is surprised that the Lilywhites signed him on a permanent deal. The ex-player acknowledged the Frenchman’s talent, but cannot understand why Bayern Munich were willing to let him go if he has a massive ceiling. Not only that, but Robinson also questioned why Spurs were the only club willing to gamble on the 20-year-old in January if he has high potential.

One may suggest that the fans will also start asking these questions if Mathys Tel fails to perform consistently under Thomas Frank next season. The talented forward needs to dig deep at N17 and make consistent impact for the Lilywhites if he wants to become a mainstay at the North London club. With his potential and talent, fans will only hope that the Lilywhites can bring out the best in him and give him time to adapt to the circumstances.
