‘Similar’ Tottenham star derails pursuit of Eberechi Eze; Arsenal set to take advantage

How might Tottenham's decision to withdraw from pursuing Eze impact their rivalry with Arsenal in the upcoming season?

Tottenham have cooled their interest in Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze

Tottenham Hotspur need quality players and adequate depth if they want to fight for trophies consistently.

Spurs managed to win the UEFA Europa League last season, but that cannot paper over the cracks. They finished just above the relegation zone in the Premier League and must make improvements in order to do well in the league next season.

Daniel Levy knows he must provide new boss Thomas Frank with plenty of resources to succeed at White Hart Lane. So far, however, things have not gone as per the plan, with Thomas Frank yet to oversee a single summer signing.

The North Londoners are targeting attacking players as a priority following their struggles in the final third during the 2024/25 campaign. This has been well-documented with their interest in several attackers, including Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze.

Should Spurs meet Palace’s £25-30m upfront fee for Eze to boost their attack?

Eberechi Eze is man in demand after enjoying a sensational end to the last season. He contributed chiefly in Crystal Palace’s FA Cup success, most notably scoring the winner against Manchester City in the final. As a result, the Eagles have now decided they will not budge on the asking price for the player, and Tottenham or any of his suitors will have to pay his £68 million release clause in order to get the deal done.

It has been widely reported that Spurs have cooled their interest in the England international despite monitoring his progress at Selhurst Park for a while now. Also, bitter rivals Arsenal have seemingly leapfrogged them in the race to sign Eberechi Eze, which may have contributed to Tottenham cooling their interest.

However, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King thinks the Lilywhites have abandoned their pursuit of the Palace star owing to the presence of a creative talent in James Maddison.

“I think Tottenham have enough midfield players,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.

“Eze is a bit too similar to Maddison, and I think Frank will want to take a look at Maddison before making any decisions. If Tottenham are going to sign Kudus, they’ll feel that a deal for Eze as well might be too much.

“Frank might have one or two other players up his sleeve whom he was watching while he was at Brentford. Maddison and Eze are quite similar, and I think Frank will want to focus on seeing Maddison back fit again.”

It goes without saying that James Maddison is arguably the most creative player in the squad. Former boss Ange Postecoglou transformed Dejan Kulusevski from a winger into a central midfielder last season, and his productivity rose. So, King is perhaps right that Frank feels he has enough creative options at his disposal right now.

Another school of thought could be that Tottenham officials felt that Arsenal have become frontrunners for Eze’s signature and decided to abandon their pursuit. By doing so, they now look fully focused on signing West Ham attacker Mohammed Kudus and have already seen their opening bid rejected.
