Tottenham set to try and tie defensive star down to a new contract after Atletico Madrid cool interest

Date:

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy wants Cristian Romero to sign a new contract and secure his future in North London

It has been a busy few days for Tottenham Hotspur in the transfer market after they followed up the signing of Mohammed Kudus from rivals West Ham United by triggering Morgan Gibbs-White’s £60m release clause at Nottingham Forest, but the Midlands outfit are accusing Spurs of an illegal approach. This has put a deal for the English midfielder in jeopardy.

If the Gibbs-White news has left the fans frustrated, they received a positive update on one of their key players’ future.

Cristian Romero has been coveted by Atletico Madrid for months now. Diego Simeone appears to be a big admirer of the Tottenham defender, having publicly called him a “great player” in June. The Spurs star has already expressed his desire of playing in La Liga in the future, adding further fuel to the speculation.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is keen hold onto Cristian Romero regardless of his desire to take up a new challenge elsewhere. To scare off his potential suitors, Levy has slapped a £70million asking price on the Argentina international’s head and is not willing to compromise on his valuation.

And on Friday, reports emerged that the North Londoners have rebuffed Atletico Madrid’s approach for Romero and made it clear to them that they won’t enter into any negotiations over him. This has resulted in Los Rojiblancos cooling their interest in the Cordoba-born talent and looking at some of his alternative options to fortify their defensive unit for the 2025/26 campaign.

Tottenham want to tie Cristian Romero down to a new contract

Now, according to a report from The Athletic, Tottenham want to try and tie Romero down to a new contract after Atletico’s unsuccessful attempts to land him following talks.

The 2022 World Cup winner still has two years remaining on his contract, but Levy does not want to risk seeing him go into the final year next term and put the club in a poor negotiating position if at all any club enters into talks. It is believed the Spurs chairman wants to make Romero the best-paid player at the club in a bid to secure his future in North London.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

In order to rebuild the squad under the new boss, Tottenham must retain the best players on the current roster. Romero is easily among the best centre-backs in the Premier League, and perhaps across the world too, which makes it vital for our club to agree on a new lucrative contract with him.

If the South American has a change of heart and agrees to fresh terms, it will be a massive boost to the Lilywhites’ chances of tasting further success next season and beyond.
