Atletico Madrid planning to go hard to sign Tottenham defender Cristian Romero before the transfer window slams shut
Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham Hotspur has been up for debate following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou.
The Argentina international has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid all summer, which has left fans feeling concerned that they could lose one of their best players during an important squad rebuild under new boss Thomas Frank. The Danish tactician will be eager to keep the centre-back, especially after Spurs lost Son Heung-min to Los Angeles FC and James Maddison to a serious knee injury.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has maintained throughout the summer that Cristian Romero is not for sale, slapping an uncompromising £70million asking price on his head. Atletico Madrid have made an approach to sign the 27-year-old last month but Tottenham quickly rebuffed their approach. This led to Los Rojiblancos cooling their interest in the player.

Atletico Madrid ready to revive their interest in the Tottenham star?
It looks like Atletico Madrid’s interest in Romero has not completely died down. Now, according to a report from Fichajes, the La Liga are looking to revive their interest in the 2022 World Cup winner and sign him before the transfer window slams shut.
In reply, Tottenham consider Romero ‘an untouchable asset’ and they have no plans to entertain any offers from anywhere, including Atletico. Although a sale is not thought to be in the Premier League club’s plans, Atletico chiefs are willing to use all their resources until the last minute to try to convince both the player and Spurs.
The aforementioned report adds talks between Atletico and intermediaries have already begun and are expected to gather pace in the coming days.

Spurs have to keep Romero at any cost
It will be interesting to see how the situation develops. Atletico might need Romero to force an exit for the deal to go through. It should be noted that the South American defender expressed his desire to play in La Liga earlier this summer, and the La Liga outfit could find encouragement from those words that the player may force through a move if they make a concrete attempt to change Tottenham’s stance.
As for Spurs, we definitely cannot afford to lose Romero. The timing of Atletico looking to return for the player does not bode well for Daniel Levy and Frank. That being said, it is actually time for Levy to act and show his ambition. Our chairman must offer Romero a lucrative new contract, make quality signings in the final weeks of the transfer window, back Frank to the hilt and build on the Europa League success.
If these things make sense for Romero, he will not push for a move to Atletico and commit his future in north London.
