Arsenal are looking to beat Tottenham to the signing of highly-rated Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie
It is absolutely clear that Tottenham Hotspur need to sign a new No.10 before the transfer window slams shut.
The Lilywhites have enjoyed a strong start to their new Premier League campaign under Thomas Frank, winning the first two games against Burnley and Manchester City. However, the glaring issue in both those games was that the Danish tactician was forced to play a central midfielder in Pape Matar Sarr as his No.10.
Among the many players that Spurs tried to sign this summer, one of them is Eberechi Eze. The England international was heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane and the club had agreed terms with him, only for arch-rivals Arsenal to swoop in and hijack the signing at the 11th hour. And now it looks like the Gunners are looking to strike another blow to Tottenham.
Arsenal planning to beat Tottenham to Bundesliga star’s signature
In addition to a No.10, Spurs are also eyeing a new central defender. They have identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie as a key target to bolster their backline during the final stages of the transfer window.
In fact, as per transfer news king Fabrizio Romano on X, Tottenham have approached Bayer Leverkusen with new proposal of a loan deal with obligation to buy the defender for around €60m, which is the same value as his release clause, but to be paid next year. They have also started discussing personal terms with the Ecuador international.
However, as we’ve witnessed all summer long, it would not be straightforward for Spurs to sign him. This is because as per reputable journalist David Ornstein on X, Arsenal are working to sign Piero Hincapie. The deal is subject to player exits, as Hincapie has told Bayer that he wants to leave before the transfer window and is prioritising a move to the Gunners over other clubs.

Tottenham cannot miss out on another target to Arsenal
The wounds of Eze has not dried yet, and Arsenal are planning to inflict more pain on Spurs. Both north London clubs are now fighting for the signature of Hincapie, who has emerged among the Bundesliga’s strongest defenders over the last couple of years. The South American played a key role in Bayer’s surprise title triumph under Xabi Alonso during the 2023/24 season.
After four seasons in the Bundesliga, the 23-year-old wants to enjoy a new adventure and the Premier League appears to be his most likely destination. Unsurprisingly, he has been coveted by several clubs, including Spurs and Arsenal.
From Arsenal’s perspective, the move for Hincapie is subject to play exits, which could provide Thomas Frank’s Tottenham with some remaining hope. However, with FC Porto expected to table a new proposal- loan with obligation to buy- for Jakub Kiwior this week, which if the Gunners accept could make space for the Ecuadorian star’s signing.
Keeping the latest developments in mind, Daniel Levy cannot afford to dillydally and do everything possible to lure Hincapie to the white side of north London. The versatile defender favours a move Mikel Arteta’s side, but it is now up to Levy and Co. to ensure they sell our club’s project well and make him a tempting offer. Surely we cant lose out to Arsenal once again in the same window.
