Tottenham could reignite £69m move for Brazilian star in January

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur could make a renewed push to land Manchester City winger Savinho in January

We saw how Tottenham Hotspur wanted to add some firepower in the frontline in the recently concluded summer transfer window, and the Lilywhites came close to pulling off a blockbuster signing on deadline day, given how the North Londoners’ chiefs tried to hold talks with Savinho.

Tottenham were willing to smash their transfer record to land the Brazilian winger currently from Manchester City, but when push came to shove, Pep Guardiola refused to sanction the move, and now he will play donning that City badge for the ongoing campaign.

Tottenham harbour £69m Savinho ambition

Tottenham Hotspur could make a renewed push to land Manchester City winger Savinho in January.
Savinho adds dynamism to the current Tottenham Hotspur attack.

There have been reports from TBR Football suggesting that the Lilywhites had been ready to sanction £69 million for Savinho, which would have eclipsed the North Londoners’ previous record. And impressed by the project that Thomas Frank has undertaken at Tottenham, the 21-year-old was open to the switch and appeared keen to become an integral figure in this rebuild.

Graeme Bailey explained:

“The fact that Tottenham were willing, in theory, to break their transfer record for Savinho tells us everything.

“There were still some talks on Monday morning, Spurs still had a little hope of trying to persuade City to sell.

“The player wanted the move, he was impressed with Spurs, and they were impressed with him – they liked his attitude, and him wanting the move is always a green flag to a club.”

Savinho has missed the start of the season with a minor knock. Now going into the autumn, a lot will depend on how often Guardiola uses him before that winter transfer window because if he remains on the fringes, Daniel Levy will certainly be expected to return with another push in January.

Bailey continued:

“I think there is a real chance Spurs revisit this one, but much will depend on the coming months and how much he features for City,”

A potential difference maker?

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to go with another attempt to sign Savinho when the winter transfer window comes around, and that is so with similar intent that we have seen from the Lilywhites in the recently concluded summer window. The thing is, Daniel Levy is not just looking to patch holes; he wants to pay the sum and invest heavily in players who have the capacity to shape the attack for years to come.

For now, Thomas Frank will juggle Simons, Johnson, Odobert, Tel and Muani to cover that left flank role. But come January, Tottenham may look to finally sign Savinho given his ability to transform the left flank.

Do you think Tottenham should be going in to sign Savinho in the January transfer window given the options that Thomas Frank has on that left flank? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
