Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall looking forward to experiencing his first taste of Champions League
Lucas Bergvall was one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise disappointing 2024/25 Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur.
The teenager officially arrived in north London on July 1, 2024, after Spurs had agreed an £8.5m deal with Swedish side Djurgarden at the start of February. An excellent debut season that exceeded expectations saw him make 45 appearances in all competitions, with his first coming against Leicester City in our opening game of the 2024/25 season. He chipped in with a goal and four assists.
Lucas Bergvall played a key role in Tottenham’s Europa League success, even though he could not feature in the final against Manchester United in May due to an ankle ligament injury. Back in April, the midfielder was handed a new deal until 2031 as a reward for his consistent displays.

Bergvall excited to play in the Champions League
The Sweden international suffered an ankle injury towards the end of last season and is being eased back into the team by new boss Thomas Frank. After starting the opening weekend win over Burnley, he has come off the bench in the last two Premier League games against Manchester City and Bournemouth.
Bergvall was part of the national team squad for this international break but didn’t feature for Sweden in the World Cup qualifiers win over Slovenia and 2-0 defeat to Kosovo on Monday. Before the shock defeat to Kosovo, he spoke to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen to discuss over his fitness, Thomas Frank and the north London club’s entry into the Champions League.
The teenager has not played in the Champions League yet, but that can soon change when Spurs started their European campaign next week with a home game against Villarreal. And he is excited by the prospect of featuring in the Champions League for the first time in his young career. Here is what Bergvall told Fotbollskanalen:
“It will be incredibly fun to play in the Champions League. Incredibly fun. I’m incredibly grateful and it’s fun that I got to do it after the first season.”
The teenager is expected to be a key player for Thomas Frank
Bergvall certainly showed glimpses of his high potential last term, with former boss Ange Postecoglou picking him ahead of the experienced Yves Bissouma in midfield in big games. He is a big talent, and the Lilywhites did very well to tie him down to a long-term contract earlier this year.
The Swede is having to bide his time and wait for a run of games in the team, but hopefully he should be back fully fit quite soon. With games set to come thick and fast after this international break, expect Bergvall to get regular minutes for Spurs.
