Insider feels Tottenham star must prove fitness before considering big money move amid Real Madrid links

Date:

One of the many positives for Tottenham this season has been the standout performance from Micky van de Ven, week in, week out. The Dutchman is showing his class at the heart of the defence for the Lilywhites, proving he is the right man to lead the North London club towards future glory. The 24-year-old’s immense contributions at both ends of the pitch have not been overlooked by the fans.

Spurs have kept four clean sheets in six games this season under Thomas Frank, and most of the credit should go to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. The pair have forged a great relationship at the back for the Lilywhites, ensuring opposition players do not have an inch of space to exploit during games.

But it is Van de Ven who has made the most prominent impact for Tottenham this season. The 24-year-old got on the scoresheet against West Ham in the Premier League last week, before following that up with an immense performance against Villarreal in the Champions League at N17. This shows how far the Dutchman has come during his time at the North London club.

Micky van de Ven still needs to prove himself at Tottenham

It is not a surprise that Micky van de Ven is already linked with a move away from Tottenham. It was reported earlier that Real Madrid are keeping tabs on the Dutchman, with the La Liga giants aiming to secure a deal for the 24-year-old quickly next summer and bolster their defence under Xabi Alonso. However, the report also stated that Spurs have no intention of losing Van de Ven and have set an asking price of €80m for his services.

Despite the intense transfer links to Real Madrid, John Wenham has urged Van de Ven to improve his fitness at Tottenham this season. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,

“He would have to have a season this season where he plays 40 or 50 games. Thus far in his Tottenham career, there’s no basis for a Real Madrid or Barcelona to pay the fee we would ask, which would be £90million, because we bought him in for £40m+, improved him, and he’s established himself in the Netherlands team, in the Premier League, etc.”

The Lilywhite Rose owner added,

“But his injury record is not one a club at the moment would drop £90m on, but it’s what we would ask and rightly so. So, it’s a difficult situation because until he does a full season, it’s impossible for anyone to go for him because they’ll always be worried about the hamstring injuries that he picks up.”

John Wenham believes Tottenham are right to be asking £90m for Van de Ven’s services, despite knowing that the Dutchman is injury-prone. The Lilywhite Rose owner suggests that Real Madrid would not look to spend a huge fee on the 24-year-old, knowing that he has not even managed to play 50 games in a season for the Lilywhites. Wenham adds that any potential suitor would not want to pay a high fee for Van de Ven, as the defender has still not proven his fitness during his time at N17.

This might be a blessing in disguise for Spurs going forward. Keeping Micky van de Ven at N17 is as good as signing a new player every summer. The Dutchman has all the attributes to become an icon at the North London club, and retaining him in the coming years must be a priority for the Lilywhites.
