Tottenham defender Luka Vuskovic opens up on the possibility of staying at HSV Hamburger beyond this season
Tottenham Hotspur released many players at the end of last season. This helped them trim their squad, creating spaces for new players to come in. In addition, Spurs also allowed several players to leave on loan during the summer transfer window.
One of the players who left Tottenham on loan was Luka Vuskovic. Having officially arrived in N17 at the start of July, the teenager made an immediate impression with his performances in pre-season. However, Thomas Frank and his coaches decided a loan move would help him in his development, and Luka Vuskovic pushed to join newly-promoted Bundesliga HSV Hamburger.
The defender is spending the 2025/26 season in the Bundesliga, as he has taken an important step up from his previous loan spells in Poland and Belgium. The towering Croat did not have a memorable Bundesliga debut as he was a part of the HSV Hamburger side that was trounced 5-0 by Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich.
He bounced back with a strong performance and scored his maiden Bundesliga goal in Hamburger’s 2-1 win over Heidenheim. Simultaneously, Vuskovic also managed to hurt his fingers. Luckily, the youngster did not suffer fracture in those fingers and featured in the weekend’s game against Union Berlin.

Vuskovic opens up on possibility of staying at Hamburger beyond loan spell
Vuskovic started in a three-man backline and helped Hamburg keep a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw with Union Berlin on Saturday. Interestingly, the Croatian starlet became the first player in over five seasons to win 18 aerial duels in a single game in Europe’s top five leagues. The defender’s aerial ability and goalscoring ability was well-documented last season with seven goals for KVC Westerlo on loan.
The Tottenham loanee gave a lengthy interview to Bild on Sunday, in which he was asked about the possibility of staying at the Volksparkstadion beyond the current loan spell. Answering this question, Vuskovic said:
“I just arrived, so that’s not an issue right now. Let’s see what happens next summer.”

Vuskovic focused on performing well at Hamburg
Vuskovic has been doing well at Hamburg, showcasing his potential in the Bundesliga. Tottenham do have the option to recall him back in January, and that is certainly an option Thomas Frank must not consider unless there is an injury crisis.
The Croat is adapting quickly to the demands of the Bundesliga and has now not closed the door for a return to Hamburg after his loan spell. This shows he’s thriving in an environment, but if Vuskovic performs consistently throughout his loan at Hamburg, he’d get a chance to break into the Tottenham side next season or better loan offers from elsewhere.
