Tottenham Hotspur cannot delay deciding Rodrigo Bentancur’s future at N17 as we head towards the January window
It comes as no surprise that Tottenham are looking to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the upcoming transfer window. The Lilywhites want to add depth for the second half of the campaign. And for that, the North London club is willing to splash the cash in the January transfer window and sign a new midfielder.
However, Spurs may be better served by focusing closer to home – specifically on Rodrigo Bentancur’s contract situation. The Uruguay international has just 11 months left on his contract deal and will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with other clubs once the January transfer window opens.

Given how vital the 28-year-old is to Thomas Frank’s system, it would not be a shock if Tottenham begin talks soon to secure his long-term future at N17. But they will need to act quickly, as rival clubs are already circling with interest in the midfielder.
Tottenham to make an announcement regarding Rodrigo Bentancur’s future?
Time is running out for Tottenham to resolve Rodrigo Bentancur’s future at N17. The Uruguay international has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, with the Spanish giants expected to reinforce their midfield next summer. If the Lilywhites fail to tie Bentancur down before January, they risk losing a key player for free next year.
Noticing that Bentancur would be able to enter talks with other clubs in January, John Wenham has also stressed the urgency of the matter. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,
“With Bentancur, though, we’ve got to remember that he’s now just three months away from being able to negotiate that pre-contract to leave for free in the summer. So surely, some update has got to come out that soon because he’s featuring a lot at the moment for Frank, and he’s being selected for a lot of games.”
John Wenham’s comments are a reminder that the clock is ticking as we slowly approach the winter transfer window. Unless Spurs make their move swiftly, Bentancur could begin talks with interested clubs as early as January. Wenham expects the Lilywhites to provide an update on the 28-year-old’s future before the window opens in the coming months.
It remains unclear what lies ahead for the Uruguay international. Reports earlier this month suggested Tottenham were preparing to open fresh contract negotiations with the midfielder, but progress appears to have stalled for now. The challenge for the club will be to present Bentancur with an offer that convinces him to commit his best years to N17.
