Injury ruined Tottenham’s pursuit of £70 million South American star last summer; time to move on?

Date:

Savinho opted to stay put at Manchester City despite Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit for his signature

Tottenham managed to salvage their summer transfer window by securing several high-quality signings before deadline day. The arrivals of Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, and Randal Kolo Muani demonstrated the club’s determination to strengthen the attack ahead of Thomas Frank’s first season in charge.

However, despite their ambitious approach, Spurs failed to land a few key targets they had heavily pursued — one of the most notable being Manchester City winger Savinho. The Brazilian international was strongly linked with a move to N17 throughout the summer, with both clubs reportedly optimistic about finalising a deal. But when it came down to the wire, the Cityzens ultimately decided to keep hold of the 21-year-old for the season.

Tottenham were on the cusp of signing Savinho in the summer.

The failure to secure Savinho’s signature has proven to be a major setback for Thomas Frank. The young winger was viewed as the ideal long-term successor to Heung-Min Son on the left flank. Without him, Frank now finds himself without a natural left-sided attacker, leaving a noticeable imbalance in Tottenham’s forward line.

What really happened with Savinho’s failed transfer to Tottenham?

As it was reported earlier, Tottenham were aggressively trying to sign Manchester City winger Savinho in the summer. The Lilywhites had agreed personal terms with the player and viewed him as an ideal replacement of Heung-Min Son. But for one reason or another, they failed to secure his signature before the transfer window deadline.

As per Jack Gaughan (via Daily Mail), Manchester City refused to compromise on their valuation of the Brazilian. The Premier League champions made it clear that they would only consider offers in excess of £70 million for the winger’s services. While they were open to letting the player leave for the right price, Spurs were reluctant to meet City’s steep demands.

Adding to Tottenham’s frustration, Savinho reportedly suffered a minor injury toward the end of the window, halting progress in negotiations. Although the Brazilian was said to be keen on a move to N17 and intrigued by the prospect of becoming a key figure under Thomas Frank, he ultimately decided to sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium after being reassured by Pep Guardiola’s faith in him.

Savinho’s failed transfer will likely go down as a classic “what if” scenario for Tottenham. The 21-year-old’s pace, creativity, and ability to beat defenders one-on-one would have provided the Lilywhites with a new dimension on the left-wingm an area where they currently lack depth.

In comparison, players like Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert have struggled to replicate the natural flair and dynamism that Savinho offers. His presence could have significantly elevated Spurs’ attacking threat, giving Thomas Frank more tactical flexibility and unpredictability in the final third.
