Bundesliga sporting director keen to retain Tottenham star beyond 2026

Bundesliga club HSV Hamburger are keen to keep Tottenham loanee Luka Vuskovic beyond the 2025/26 campaign

Tottenham Hotspur showed with their acquisition of Luka Vuskovic two years ago that they are keeping an eye on the best young emerging talent from Europe.

The 18-year-old officially arrived at Spurs in July after two years out on loan, most notably making his name at KVC Westerloo in the last 18 months. He has been loaned out to HSV Hamburger for the 2025/26 campaign, and the centre-back is already making a big impression in the Bundesliga.

Since his forgetful debut in the 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich, Luka Vuskovic has recovered brilliantly and delivered some strong performances for HSV Hamburger. An integral part of the three-man backline, the Croat has helped Hamburg keep successive clean sheets against Union Berlin and Mainz before October’s international break.

Spurs have watched on as the teenager recently won the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month award. The defender’s performances are already attracting plenty of attention, with RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund monitoring the Tottenham man ahead of the January transfer window.

HSV Hamburger sporting director already wants to extend Luka Vuskovic’s stay

Going by Vuskovic’s performances in the German top-flight, Tottenham fans may have been wondering whether he’d be recalled by Thomas Frank in January to boost his defensive options for the second half of the season. As per recent reports, the Lilywhites have told Hamburg that they want Vuskovic to spend the entire season at Volksparkstadion.

This has been reiterated by Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa, dousing the chances of a potential recall. He has also admitted that the German club already want to extend the defender’s loan move from Tottenham.

“The Luka Vuskovic issue has been with us throughout the summer,” Claus Costa said in an interview with Transfermarkt.

“We always had the clear intention of signing him – and he committed to us relatively early on. We didn’t want to take Luka away from Tottenham and instead wanted to create a win-win-win situation.

“We’re helping Tottenham, Luka is helping us, and we’re all helping him. He’s playing very convincingly, has a great charisma, and gives us a lot. We’re happy to have him.

“It’s only October, so much can still happen between now and May; there are many variables. As of now, there’s no contractual option. Based on what we’ve seen so far, we’d like to keep him longer – definitely.

“We certainly wouldn’t mind. The question is how we’ll get there, what Tottenham’s plan is, and how Luka’s season is going. But that’s a crystal ball gazing exercise and impossible to assess as of today.”

Tottenham will have a decision to make on Luka Vuskovic’s future next year

Tottenham must make a decision on Vuskovic’s future in the summer

Tottenham have been keeping close tabs on Vuskovic’s performances at Hamburg, and going by what they’ve seen so far this season, they should be happy. As a result, they do not intend to disrupt his development by cutting short his loan spell in January, unless there is an injury crisis in Frank’s backline.

It is clear that the Croatian international has a big future at White Hart Lane, but they simply cannot throw him at the deep end in the Premier League as he is still only 18. A loan in Bundesliga would certainly benefit him, and after he completes the season in Hamburg, the Hotspur Way chiefs will then have the decision to make whether to let him stay at Volksparkstadion for another year, loan him to a club playing in Europe or allow him to fight for spot in Frank’s side.

Several factors will dictate Vuskovic’s future, which is why the Split native’s loan at Hamburg becomes so crucial.
