Chelsea look set to beat Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been in the transfer market to bring in a new goalkeeper. The North Londoners have reportedly shown interest in signing Barcelona’s veteran squad member Marc-Andre ter Stegen. But at the moment it looks like the Lilywhites’ Premier League risk is that Chelsea may beat Tottenham to the punch for his signature. And frankly, given the performances from Vicario, it is hard to see too many Lilywhites supporters losing sleep over it.

The German international has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time now. The links to his signature initially emerged earlier this season when there were calls made to drop Guglielmo Vicario earlier this season.

But given his performances of late, the 29-year-old has shut down all the noise coming from the outside. He has put in two commendable displays on the go, and these back-to-back heroics showed his importance to the side. His run of clean sheets against Monaco and Everton was a reminder to the Tottenham fans of the quality that he possesses.

Chelsea are leading the race to sign Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen

And now journalist Dean Jones claims that West Londoners’ Chelsea are now leading the race to sign the six-time La Liga winner. The Blues could look to secure his services on loan in the winter transfer window. And Barcelona, given their eagerness to trim their wage bill, might be open to such a move in the winter.

Speaking in an interview with TEAMtalk, Jones said:

“It would not surprise me if Chelsea looked into getting Ter Stegen on loan for the second half of the season.

“They want to make sure they are well prepared for any big moments and will definitely not want to be caught short in such a key position, which has been a concern already.

“Obviously, he will be swamped with offers, so competing for a spot may not turn out to be something that appeals to him. The wages situation could come into the equation, too.”

Frank will want to prioritize other positions.

Tottenham supporters won’t likely rue much over missing out on signing Marc-Andre ter Stegen. And more importantly, there is this pressing need at Hotspur Way for immediate reinforcements. The Premier League heavyweights need a new striker, a winger, and another midfielder. And all of the aforementioned positions are on the club’s winter checklist.

Those three positions can help Thomas Frank take this side to the next phase. So impeding more for a keeper who would likely be benched will not be much of a priority at N17, especially given how the current goalkeeper has started to hit world-class form.

So if Chelsea want to fork out those massive wages to get ter Stegen, let them. Tottenham should keep their focus in other areas, ones that are far more important in the long run.
