Tottenham Hotspur urged to sign Joao Palhinha permanently in 2026
It’s not often that Tottenham get their transfer business spot on during the summer window. But credit where it’s due, the Lilywhites surprised many with their efficiency this time around, bringing in experienced, top-quality players to strengthen the squad. The North London club opted for proven names to give Thomas Frank the best possible platform to build on last season’s Europa League success.
One of Spurs’ standout performers this season has undoubtedly been João Palhinha. The Portuguese international has looked a class apart in midfield, anchoring the side with composure, physicality, and leadership. He has barely put a foot wrong, contributing effectively at both ends of the pitch. It’s no surprise that he has become one of the first names on Thomas Frank’s team sheet at N17.

Palhinha’s best display in a Spurs shirt arguably came against Everton in the Premier League last weekend. The 30-year-old showcased his full range of abilities at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, reminding everyone why he’s regarded as one of the best in his position. According to Sofascore, Palhinha earned a 7.4 match rating, winning three of his four attempted tackles, completing one clearance, and maintaining an impressive 85% passing accuracy.
Tottenham must do everything they can to sign Joao Palhinha permanently
Joao Palhinha’s consistency and authority have quickly made him a fan favourite among the Spurs faithful. Operating as a #6 under Frank, Palhinha has excelled in breaking up play, regaining possession, and even contributing to attacking transitions. Simply put, he has become the heartbeat of the team this season.
Now, Alasdair Gold has heaped praise on the 30-year-old’s impact at N17, simultaneously urging Spurs to make his loan deal permanent in the coming months. Speaking on his own YouTube channel, Gold said,
“Palhinha’s settled in very, very well into the squad. A lot of players really respect him. I mean, he’s an elder statesman in the group. I think a lot of them look to him as well. He’s very good with his decision making.”
The journalist added,
“He is also quick on the ball with his passing, his decisions with the ball, and very quick in knowing when to make a challenge. So yeah, he’s settled in very well. I still think it has to be the easiest decision to make him a permanent Spurs player.”
Gold suggests Palhinha has already become one of the leading figures in the dressing room at Tottenham, with many players looking to learn from him. The 30-year-old’s ability to recover possession, as well as, making the right decisions with the ball, has helped him become one of the standout players for the Lilywhites this season. Also, Gold believes that the Portuguese has settled in well at N17, and Spurs would end up making a mistake if they did not sign him on a permanent deal in the coming months.
Tottenham are already planning to open talks with Bayern Munich in the winter to convert Palhinha’s loan deal into a permanent signing before the end of the season. The Lilywhites are clearly happy with what they are seeing, and believe the prolific midfielder will play a crucial part under Thomas Frank. The 30-year-old is also happy to extend his stay at N17 as he is getting regular gametime whilst playing for a top club in the Premier League.
