Ronald Araujo is facing a tough time breaking into the starting eleven at Barcelona amid Tottenham Hotspur interest
Despite their early exit from the Carabao Cup, Tottenham are enjoying an excellent start to the season under Thomas Frank. The Lilywhites currently sit third in the Premier League, having won five of their opening nine matches. They have also managed to maintain their unbeaten run in the Champions League, securing five points from their opening three games.
Thomas Frank has already improved the North London club in several ways in a remarkably short period. Spurs have become much more defensively solid this season, keeping seven clean sheets in 14 matches across all competitions. The partnership between Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven has been a major reason for their success, with the duo providing stability and leadership at the back.

Backup defender Kevin Danso has also played a crucial role in helping Tottenham maintain their defensive structure this season. The Austrian has seamlessly filled in for Romero when called upon, displaying grit, composure, and determination to make the most of his limited opportunities at N17. However, with an increasing number of injury concerns, the Lilywhites may need to add further depth to their backline in the upcoming transfer window.
Tottenham continue to monitor Barcelona defender Ronald Aruajo
Tottenham are currently without eleven first-team players due to an ongoing injury crisis. This situation has forced the club to consider making reinforcements in January. Recent reports suggested that the North Londoners were interested in testing the waters for Ronald Araújo’s signature. However, the Uruguayan defender initially made it clear that he was not seeking an exit and intended to fight for his place under Hansi Flick at Barcelona.
Now, though, there appears to be a twist in the transfer saga involving the highly rated centre-back. As per Graeme Bailey (via TBR Football),
“Araujo has always had admirers in England. Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea – they’d all sign him tomorrow. The issue has never been interest, but his own reluctance to leave Barca. That might now be changing. With younger defenders ahead of him, he’s starting to realise his future may lie elsewhere.”
As Bailey highlights, the demand for Araújo’s services is clear. The only obstacle to a potential move has been the Uruguayan’s hesitation to leave Barcelona mid-season. However, with the 26-year-old now slipping further down the pecking order under Flick, he may be open to a new challenge in the coming months to reignite his career.
Tottenham will likely face stiff competition from Manchester United and Chelsea for Araujo’s signature, which only underlines how highly regarded the defender is across Europe. His positional awareness, composure in transitions, and leadership qualities make him an ideal candidate for Thomas Frank’s system. Moreover, his ability to read the game and organize the backline would make him a valuable addition to Spurs’ defence in the second half of the season.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will go all-in for Araujo when the transfer window opens. Could he be the missing piece to solidify their defence and sustain their momentum? Only time will tell.
